Bees 'self-medicate' when infected with some pathogens

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? Research from North Carolina State University shows that honey bees "self-medicate" when their colony is infected with a harmful fungus, bringing in increased amounts of antifungal plant resins to ward off the pathogen.

"The colony is willing to expend the energy and effort of its worker bees to collect these resins," says Dr. Michael Simone-Finstrom, a postdoctoral research scholar in NC State's Department of Entomology and lead author of a paper describing the research. "So, clearly this behavior has evolved because the benefit to the colony exceeds the cost."

Wild honey bees normally line their hives with propolis, a mixture of plant resins and wax that has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Domesticated honey bees also use propolis, to fill in cracks in their hives. However, researchers found that, when faced with a fungal threat, bees bring in significantly more propolis -- 45 percent more, on average. The bees also physically removed infected larvae that had been parasitized by the fungus and were being used to create fungal spores.

Researchers know propolis is an effective antifungal agent because they lined some hives with a propolis extract and found that the extract significantly reduced the rate of infection.

And apparently bees can sometimes distinguish harmful fungi from harmless ones, since colonies did not bring in increased amounts of propolis when infected with harmless fungal species. Instead, the colonies relied on physically removing the spores.

However, the self-medicating behavior does have limits. Honey bee colonies infected with pathogenic bacteria did not bring in significantly more propolis -- despite the fact that the propolis also has antibacterial properties. "There was a slight increase, but it was not statistically significant," Simone-Finstrom says. "That is something we plan to follow up on."

There may be a lesson here for domestic beekeepers. "Historically, U.S. beekeepers preferred colonies that used less of this resin, because it is sticky and can be difficult to work with," Simone-Finstrom says. "Now we know that this is a characteristic worth promoting, because it seems to offer the bees some natural defense."

Transparent, flexible '3-D' memory chips may be the next big thing in small memory devices

ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? New memory chips that are transparent, flexible enough to be folded like a sheet of paper, shrug off 1,000-degree Fahrenheit temperatures -- twice as hot as the max in a kitchen oven -- and survive other hostile conditions could usher in the development of next-generation flash-competitive memory for tomorrow's keychain drives, cell phones and computers, a scientist reported March 27.

Speaking at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, he said devices with these chips could retain data despite an accidental trip through the drier -- or even a voyage to Mars. And with a unique 3-D internal architecture, the new chips could pack extra gigabytes of data while taking up less space.

"These new chips are really big for the electronics industry because they are now looking for replacements for flash memory," said James M. Tour, Ph.D., who led the research team. "These new memory chips have numerous advantages over the chips today that are workhorses for data storage in hundreds of millions of flash, or thumb drives, smart phones, computers and other products. Flash has about another six or seven years in which it can be built smaller, but then developers hit fundamental barriers."

Because of the way that the new memory chips are configured, namely with two terminals per bit of information rather than the standard three terminals per bit, they are much better suited for the next revolution in electronics -- 3-D memory -- than flash drives.

"In order to put more memory into a smaller area, you have to stack components beyond two dimensions, which is what is currently available," he said. "You have to go to 3-D." And the chips have a high on-off ratio, which is a measure of how much electrical current can flow in the chip when it stores information versus when it is empty. The higher the ratio, the more attractive the chips are to manufacturers.

The chips were originally composed of a layer of graphene or other carbon material on top of silicon oxide, which has long been considered an insulator, a passive component in electronic devices. Graphene is a thin layer of carbon atoms that's touted as a "miracle material" because it is the thinnest and strongest known material. It was even the topic of a recent Nobel Prize. Originally, the researchers at Rice University thought that the amazing memory capability of the chips was due to the graphene. They discovered recently that they were wrong. The silicon oxide surface was actually making the memories, and now they can make them graphene-free. The work was done by Tour's group in collaboration with Professor Douglas Natelson (Department of Physics) and Lin Zhong (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering). The main students on the project were Jun Yao and Javen Lin.

The transparency and small size of the new chips enables them to be used in a wide range of potential applications. Manufacturers could embed them in glass for see-through windshield displays for everyday driving, military and space uses so that not only is the display in the windshield, but also the memory. That frees up space elsewhere in the vehicle for other devices and functionalities. In fact, the chips were onboard a recent Russian Progress 44 cargo spacecraft in August 2011 for further experimentation aboard the International Space Station. However, the vehicle never made it into space and crashed. "The spacecraft crashed over Siberia, so our chips are in Siberia!" said Tour. He hopes to send the chips on a future mission in July 2012 to see how the memory holds up in the high-radiation environment of space.

Current touch screens are made of indium tin oxide and glass, both of which are brittle and can break easily. However, plastic containing the memory chips could replace those screens with the added bonuses of being flexible while also storing large amounts of memory, freeing up space elsewhere in a phone for other components that could provide other services and functions. Alternatively, storing memory in small chips in the screen instead of within large components inside the body of a phone could allow manufacturers to make these devices much thinner.

The easy-to-fabricate memory chips are patented, and Tour is talking to manufacturers about embedding the chips into products.

The scientists acknowledged funding from the Texas Instruments Leadership University Fund, the National Science Foundation Award No. 0720825 and the Army Research Office through the SBIR program administrated by PrivaTran, LLC.

Three to vie for top World Bank job

The World Bank announced Friday three candidates to succeed outgoing president Robert Zoellick in the first challenge to the US monopoly of the top job in history.

Well-known economists from Colombia and Nigeria were nominated to contend with the US candidate, a Korea-born, US-raised physician known for fighting to bring medical services to impoverished communities around the world.

The three were American nominee Jim Yong Kim, currently president of Dartmouth College; Colombian Jose Antonio Ocampo, a professor at Columbia University; and Nigerian finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The announcement launched an unprecedented competition to lead the 187-nation development lender, with the Bank's executive board to interview the three candidates in the coming weeks.

The Bank said it expected to select its new president "by consensus" by its 2012 Spring Meetings with the International Monetary Fund that begin on April 20.

Zoellick plans to step down at the end of his term in June.

In a Rose Garden news conference at the White House on Friday, US President Barack Obama unveiled Kim as Washington's nominee, a physician who has worked for decades in global health issues.

Earlier Africa's leading economies South Africa, Angola and Nigeria announced their support for Okonjo-Iweala, who spent more than two decades at the Bank, rising to managing director, the number two position under Zoellick, before returning to Nigeria.

Ocampo, who originally nominated himself, is a former finance minister and central bank chief; it was not immediately available which country had endorsed him.

Thanks to a tacit agreement, the United States, the Bank's biggest stakeholder, has always chosen the head of the World Bank, and has always named an American, while Europe has always named one of its own to head the International Monetary Fund.

But that pact has triggered anger from developing and emerging economies seeking greater representation to reflect their rising contributions to the global economy.

The job is crucial, overseeing the Bank's mission to provide financial and technical assistance to countries struggling to rise out of poverty.

The Washington-based bank lent $57.3 billion last year and has more than 9,000 employees worldwide.

The surprise choice of Kim, a physician little-known beyond academic and global health circles, marked a break with Washington's usual candidates tapped from politics or Wall Street.

A Harvard-trained doctor and anthropologist, Kim, 52, is the former director of the department of HIV/AIDS at the World Health Organization. He became the president of the Ivy League college Dartmouth, in New Hampshire, in July 2009.

"It's time for a development professional to lead the world's largest development agency," Obama said in a Rose Garden news conference with Kim at his side.

"Jim has spent more than two decades working to improve conditions in developing countries around the world," the president said. "I believe that nobody is more qualified to carry out that mission than Doctor Jim Kim."

The US nomination of Kim makes him an instant favorite for the job.

According to a US Treasury official, Kim will be traveling abroad in the coming weeks seeking support for his bid.

France, another big Bank stakeholder, appeared supportive.

"The principle is that there is this choice by the United States at the World Bank and the Europeans at the IMF. There is no reason at this point to change that," French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe told AFP after Kim was nominated.

But Okonjo-Iweala, widely respected for her work at the Bank in the past, could mount a stiff challenge.

"I consider the World Bank a very important institution for the world and particularly for developing countries deserving of the best leadership," she said Friday.

"So I look forward to a contest of very strong candidates, and am I confident? Absolutely."

Jeffrey Sachs, another popular development economist who nominated himself for the job and picked up a number of small country endorsements, withdrew Friday when Kim was nominated.

"Jim Kim is a superb nominee for WB," Sachs tweeted.

"I support him 100 percent. I thank all who supported me and know they'll be very pleased with today's news."
