U.S. Army Corps of Engineers responds to Mayor Berke's letter

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

One day after Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke sent a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers urging action to have a dilapidated river barge removed, the corps has responded.

A response came in very quickly - within 24 hours. ?

After Mayor Andy Berke openly voiced his opinion, he said leaving the run down barge sitting on Chattanooga's waterfront is? "unacceptable." Several community members and surrounding business owners feel the same way about this floating eye soar. ?

Mayor Andy Berke sent the Army Corps of engineers a letter this week urging them to take action immediately - they responded giving the owner 3 months to hall the barge away.

"The corps met with Mr. Casey and granted him 90 days to complete corrective action to bring his permit up to compliance. After the 90 day period we will make a decision to reinstate, modify or revoke the permit," said Lee Roberts , Army Corps of Engineers.

Mr. Casey told Channel 3 in the past he wanted to turn the barge into a restaurant. Those plans fell through according to Casey because of financial issues.?

We reached out to Casey Friday to find out his plans now that he has 3 months to turn the barge into a business or remove it, he didn't respond.
