9 Tips For Designing Awesome Infographics

Have you notice how popular infographics have become? Have you wondered how you can make your infographics stand out and present your info with them more efficiently? If so keep reading!

Infographics is a way of presenting information using graphics. They tell a deeper and broader story than text alone, and usually take up less space as well. They can also communicate your information more quickly even If your audience can't read well or doesn't know the contained language that well.

1. Infographics is still design and need to abide by design rules (or at least break them consciously) in order to be efficient. So you will need at least a basic knowledge of grids, layouts, elements and principles of design, color and typography. Also you will have to follow the same creative process as usually: understand the brief, research, ideate, sketch, refine.

So in addition to the above let's see what else we can do to make our infographics more efficient.

2. Infographics must be able to stand alone. This mean that they shouldn't rely on hidden info buried in a supplementary text. Info you didn't include in your infographic, don't assume that your viewer will look for, even if they are in the same article!

3. It goes without saying that you should have already researched deeply the subject, and that you understand it perfectly. Don't expect people to understand an infographic, with info you the designer haven't understand clearly!

4. Make or break a grid to organize and structure your infographic. Your infographic's elements are still designs inside a design, so all the layout rules apply to it as well. For example if you align elements correctly you will create cohesion and unity.

5. As you create the elements, cluster the related items. Employ proximity and leave plenty of negative space for the eyes to rest and to also prevent confusion.

6. Most likely the infographic will have to follow an overall style, especially if it's for a company or a product with a specific brand identity. Study their manual and reinforce your design with those brand elements.

7. If you can use colour consider colour theory and your intended audience. Colour is your greatest ally! Not only because it will make your message stronger, but mostly because it will provide you an additional way to guide your viewers eyes. If you can't use colour employ the grayscale in a smart way to create contrast, and achieve similar effects!

8. Avoid over-cluttering and over-decorating. Ornaments and fancy embellishments will detract your viewer for the intended message. Keep it simple and to the point. After all you have probably been hired to efficiently convey information not to create complex art!

9. Avoid using too many words, again you are not writing a novel. Keep information short and to the point. Make your headlines and titles short, and try to explain your subject with six words or less. Use action verbs and keep your writing to the third person.
