Greenwich residents Paula and Robert G. Burton Sr. met with Kathy Clark the Breast Cancer Alliance (BCA) president, back left, and Yonni Wattenmaker, the BCA?s executive director, back right, to present the next installment of their pledge to donate $1 million to the BCA.

Greenwich residents Paula and Robert G. Burton Sr. are making good on their pledge to donate $1 million to the Breast Cancer Alliance (BCA), having presented their next installment to the organization on July 22.

The Burtons have been major donors to the BCA since 1997. Last summer, in gratitude for their nearly two decades worth of support to BCA, and as a way to recognize and honor other top donors and longtime supporters, the Breast Cancer Alliance established the Leadership Circle, in which Mr. and Mrs. Burton are in the Diamond level, which is BCA?s top category.

?The past success and future potential of our organization are grounded in the generosity of private donors who have made a real difference with their significant giving,? said Yonni Wattenmaker, executive director of the BCA. ?With government funding at an all time low with regard to healthcare, it is private donors who will truly be responsible for funding innovations in research, training breast surgeons and providing the screening and diagnostic support for uninsured women as the Burtons do.?

The mission of the Breast Cancer Alliance is to improve survival rates and quality of life for those impacted by breast cancer through better prevention, early detection, treatment and cure. To promote these goals, the BCA invests in innovative research, breast surgery fellowships, regional education, dignified support and screening for the uninsured and underserved.

The Breast Cancer Alliance is one of the largest private non-corporate breast cancer organizations in the U.S. The Alliance is dedicated exclusively to funding innovative breast cancer research, breast surgical fellowships and promoting breast health through education and outreach programs. The Breast Cancer Alliance has awarded more than $17 million dollars since it was founded in 1996.

For more information, or to register for the annual benefit luncheon and fashion show on Nov. 7, contact the Breast Cancer Alliance at breastcanceralliance.org or call 203-861-0014.

'Love Potion No. 9' singer sues over Clovers' name

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Harold Winley performed the hit song "Love Potion No. 9" with the R&B group The Clovers more than a half-century ago, but now the 80-year-old says another group is trying to keep him from performing using the Clovers name.

Winley, now a Florida resident, says he was in his teens when he and four others started performing as The Clovers in the Washington area. The group played at the city's Apollo Theater, eventually signed with Atlantic Records and celebrated when "Love Potion No. 9" became their biggest hit in 1959.

Two groups later performed as The Clovers, including one that trademarked the name in the 1980s. A dispute led to the lawsuit that was filed earlier this year in Washington. Both sides will meet Monday to try to work things out.

Motherly tenderness: Pope says church must embody, mirror God's mercy

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Mercy is a word Pope Francis uses often, and an attitude he believes the Catholic Church must embody and all Catholics must mirror.

"This is the time for mercy," Pope Francis told reporters July 28 during his flight back to Rome from Brazil. "The church is mother and must follow the path of mercy, and find mercy for everyone."

"This age is a 'kairos' of mercy," he said, using the Greek word for a special or particularly opportune moment.

The church has a special obligation particularly to the many who are suffering because "of the not-so-beautiful witness of some priests, also the problem of corruption in the church, and the problem of clericalism, for example, which have left so many wounds, so many wounded," he said. "The church, which is mother, must go and heal those wounds."

Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, told Vatican Radio July 30 that one of the things that strikes people most about Pope Francis is his "great effectiveness in helping people understand the theme of God's love and mercy, which reaches out to soothe and heal the wounds of humanity."

For Pope Francis the best place for an individual Catholic to experience God's mercy is in the sacrament of confession. But he has insisted that human repentance does not trigger God's mercy -- God already is waiting for his children to return.

When speaking about God's mercy, Pope Francis often uses the story of the Prodigal Son from the 15th chapter of St. Luke's Gospel, and he used it with the reporters as well.

"When the Prodigal Son returned home, the father didn't say, 'Sit down. Tell me what you did with the money.' No, he threw a party. Maybe later, when the son was ready to talk, he spoke. The church must be like that," the pope said. And like the father in the story, the church must not "just wait, but go out and watch" for those in need of mercy and forgiveness.

In his first Angelus address, just four days after his election March 13, he told a crowd in St. Peter's Square that "God's face is the face of a merciful father who is always patient. Have you thought about God's patience, the patience he has with each one of us? That is his mercy. He always has patience, patience with us, he understands us, he waits for us, he does not tire of forgiving us if we are able to return to him with a contrite heart."

In that same address, he said the book "Mercy" by retired Cardinal Walter Kasper "has done me so much good," particularly its insistence that the church needs to develop a stronger theological reflection on "this mercy of God, this merciful Father who is so patient."

"Let us remember the prophet Isaiah who says that even if our sins were scarlet, God's love would make them white as snow," the pope said. "This mercy is beautiful!"

In one of his daily Mass homilies in late April, Pope Francis told Vatican employees that going to confession is not like going to "the dry cleaners," but is an encounter with "Jesus who waits for us as we are," helps people feel shame for the wrong they have done and embraces them with God's love so that they know they are forgiven and can go out strengthened in the battle to avoid sin in the future.

In his speech to Brazilian bishops July 27, Pope Francis said, "We need a church capable of rediscovering the maternal womb of mercy. Without mercy we have little chance nowadays of entering the world of 'wounded' persons in need of understanding, forgiveness, love."

When he spoke to reporters on the plane, Pope Francis said the need for a new age of mercy was an intuition of Blessed John Paul II, who wrote an encyclical, "Rich in Mercy" in 1980, and instituted the celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday on the Sunday after Easter.

Pope John Paul's encyclical, like Cardinal Kasper's book, recognized that many people assume that God's mercy is limited by God's omnipotence and justice, but -- as the late pope wrote -- even in the Old Testament God's mercy "is shown to be not only more powerful than justice, but also more profound."

Love and mercy, Pope John Paul wrote, condition God's justice and, "in the final analysis, justice serves love."

"No human sin can prevail over this power (of God's mercy) or even limit it," the late pope said. "On the part of man only a lack of good will can limit it, a lack of readiness to be converted and to repent."

Cardinal Kasper wrote that mercy isn't God's response to a person's conversion; rather his mercy is "a grace that aims at conversion."

Although it's not an exchange or barter -- God saying he'll be merciful if one promises to repent -- Cardinal Kasper said God's mercy also isn't the "cheap grace" denounced by the Lutheran theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was executed in a Nazi concentration camp.

"Mercy without truth would be a consolation lacking honesty," Cardinal Kasper wrote; it would be "empty chatter."

"On the other hand, however, truth without mercy would be cold, off-putting and ready to wound," he said. "The truth isn't a wet rag that you throw in someone's face, but a warm cape that you help him wrap around him" to protect and give strength.

All of the sacraments are sacraments of God's mercy, the cardinal wrote, but the sacrament of penance is the one where an individual actually hears God's voice say to him or her personally, "I absolve you."

As PED-Day looms, will it deter drugs in baseball?

Baseball's PED-Day is set to launch. The question now is whether this will stop the drug cheats once and for all.

To Logan Morrison, the suspensions and shame and loss in salary might not be enough. To really deter them, the Miami Marlins' first baseman suggests clubs pay a price, too.

"Maybe penalizing the teams for guys who signed ? like Melky signing that $16 million deal ? maybe the team should have to give up something," Morrison said.

Which would be fine with Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis.

"We're sick of it. Tired of it," he said. "We don't want the fans thinking everybody cheats. You listen to people talk and they associate baseball with cheating."

"The teams maybe should look at some things. Not sign guys who are caught. That would be a good thing. Start taking guys' money away," Ellis said.

Major League Baseball was poised to levy significant drug suspensions Monday, with three-time MVP Alex Rodriguez and All-Stars Nelson Cruz and Jhonny Peralta facing the stiffest penalties in the Biogenesis case. Overall, 14 players were facing discipline.

"I think all of us are curious what's going to happen," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Sunday.

Melky Cabrera, Bartolo Colon and Yasmani Grandal served suspensions after positive tests last year. They've been tied to this performance-enhancing drug case, but can't be disciplined again for the same offense.

Cabrera, the MVP of last year's All-Star game, finished his 50-game suspension in October. Released by the champion San Francisco Giants after the season, the outfielder signed a $16 million, two-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Will the upcoming penalties serve as a deterrent? Hall of Famer Joe Morgan will wait and see.

"It depends on what the punishments are. The thing with me is always the risk versus the reward," he said. "What is the reward? Getting a $150 million contract. What is the risk? A 30-day suspension, a 60-day suspension? The risk doesn't outweigh the reward."

"Until that happens, it's not going to change," he said. "It's very simple: The risk has to outweigh the reward."

And that might mean something more drastic. Say, the risk of players immediately losing their rich deals if they're caught.

"I know they're talking about" terminating contracts, St. Louis pitcher Adam Wainwright said. "But I don't know if you want to go down that road. Once you start, where do you stop?"

It'd be a start, Padres outfielder Will Venable said.

"My personal opinion is that the penalties need to get back to the contracts," he said. "I believe that if you cross over and decide that you are going to use the banned substance, you also should forfeit the support of the players' association."

"They are not worthy of the support of the players' association. I think the combination of that and somehow having to forfeit or void your contract that you're under is something that needs to be the main focus of the penalties," he said.

For Mark McGwire, the taint of scandal cost him a chance at the Hall of Fame. For Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, the drug cloud landed them in federal court.

Rafael Palmeiro, with more than 500 home runs and 3,000 hits, became an outcast after a positive drug test. Manny Ramirez drew a suspension that ran him out of the majors, Steve Howe was banned seven times. In the 1980s, several players had reputations tarnished during the Pittsburgh cocaine trials, before that a few even went to prison.

Now, former MVP Ryan Braun is serving a 65-game ban and more big penalties are looming.

"There's a thought that maybe the punishment isn't steep enough because the guys are still doing stuff," Seattle shortstop Brendan Ryan said. "Is there a punishment that's too stiff? I don't know. It should scare anyone from doing it."

A tough task, Yankees player representative Curtis Granderson said.

"I think as long as the ability to improve and the amount of money and fame and accolades are there, there'll always be someone trying to do it," the star outfielder said during a media session at Petco Park in San Diego.

"I mean, if you go back to all of us here standing here, I'm sure one of us at some point in time has cheated off of a test, finagled a resume, entrance exams to a school. And then you see in all the different other sports and stuff, the way people have been doing stuff from these Olympics to these sports to this game."

Granderson added: "There's always a way to try to get yourself better, especially when there's a monetary value involved. Whether that be getting a scholarship, getting a job, getting a career in baseball. I think always someone's going to be trying to do it."

Hall of Famer Tony Perez, who works with the Marlins, understands the lure.

"You can make a lot of money. The temptation is hard to refuse," he said. "I'm not angry at them. They made a mistake. I don't know if I was in their shoes, I might have done it because of the money."

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said baseball needed "to make the players aware of what's acceptable and what's not, that there are consequences for bad decisions." And Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt said the commissioner's office "kind of set the precedent with Braun."

Still, Cleveland manager Terry Francona said, "we're paying a price for 15 or 20 years ago burying our heads in the sand. It's not really fair to anybody."

Not like the old days, Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax recalled.

"There's talk that with 50 games and the millions players make, it might not be enough. I'm not saying that, there's just talk," he said. "Back then we had suspensions, but nothing like this with drugs."

Fellow Hall of Famer Robin Yount said he hoped the Biogenesis case "will put an end to this, once and for all."

"It's just not necessary any more. With the drug testing in place ? again I'm no expert on it ? but I would certainly like to believe that it's a good enough program that you can't get away with it," he said. "There was a day where there was an argument where you had to do it prior to drug testing, to keep up. I'd like to believe those days are gone."

Angels player rep C.J. Wilson stressed that players taking PEDs affect more than themselves.

"The home runs that are hit because a guy's on performance-enhancing substances, those ruin somebody's ERA, which runs their arbitration case, which ruins their salary," the pitcher said.

"So it's a whole domino effect of things that can happen. If you think about it, the impact a performance-enhancing drug had on a guy who goes out and wins the All-Star game for his league, and then his team happens to get home-field advantage in the World Series and happens to win the World Series ? I mean, there's a consequence to every action," he said.

Even so, major league home run leader Chris Davis isn't sure this case will serve as a deterrent.

"Guys have obviously been suspended in the past and it hasn't stopped everybody," the Baltimore slugger said. "It's a black eye for baseball. As hard as our testing is, as sophisticated as it is, why would you even try? But I guess there are people out there doing it."

Boston first baseman Mike Napoli said he's glad this latest drug episode seemingly is coming to a close.

"We want it to just be cleaned up and be over with," he said. "People look at baseball and they've got to see Biogenesis stuff on TV all the time."

"It kind of stinks," he said. "They talk about it five hours during the day ? Biogenesis this, that."

And probably more drug cases in the future, Mets pitcher LaTroy Hawkins predicted.

"There is always going to be somebody that pushes the envelope. You know if you rob a bank and you get caught you're going to go to prison, right? Does that stop people from robbing banks? No."

"It's life. It's what happens. It's the world, it's society," he added. "Everybody is trying to get ahead. I'm not condoning it, but that's just the way it is."

Jobs report shows snail?s pace recovery

A lukewarm July jobs report, with employers reporting that they added the fewest new positions since March, is another sign of a sluggish recovery, economists said.

Employers added 162,000 jobs last month while the unemployment rate fell to 7.4 percent, largely because of a shrinking labor force.

?It?s not striking you as something horrible, but it?s not the direction you want to see,? said Elliot Winer, chief economist at Northeast Economic Analysis Group.

Many of the jobs that were added were low-paying, low-productivity jobs in the retail and food-services industries, according to Nigel Gault, co-chief economist of The Parthenon Group.

?We didn?t create a lot of jobs, and we weren?t creating good ones,? Gault said, who added the trend is not new. ?It?s certainly been something evident over the past year.?

More than half of the new jobs added in July were in those sectors. The average workweek and hourly earnings both dropped, as well.

The results leave uncertainty about the short-term decisions of the Federal Reserve Bank. Chairman Ben Bernanke had indicated tapering of the central bank?s $85 billion bond buying program could end in September if the economy continued to improve. The bond buying program has kept interest rates low, and has been a key factor in a resurgent housing market.

?It leaves fed policy up in the air,? Gault said.

Turkey ?ready? for free trade deal with Mexico, minister says

31 July 2013

ANKARA - Anadolu Agency/Turkish Economy Minister Zafer ?a?layan has said Turkey is ready to sign a comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) with Mexico.

?We hope to make necessary arrangements regarding the negotiations during Mexican President Enrique Pe?a Nieto?s upcoming visit,? he said during his meeting with Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Jose Antonio Meade.

The level of cooperation should have been higher considering the similarities between the two countries since both were ?playing an important role in their regions,? the minister said.

The Mexican president?s Turkey visit planned for September, which would be the first one at presidential level from Mexico to Turkey, will be an opportunity to take new steps in customs cooperation and double taxation as well, according to ?a?layan. During his speech, the Turkish minister stressed that despite close bilateral relations, economic cooperation between parties was inefficient with a total trading volume of $1.1 billion.

?Both Mexico and Turkey play important roles in their regions, finding opportunity for cooperation on various platforms like G-20 and OECD,? he added.

While Mexico?s exports to Turkey rose by 23.7 percent in the first five months of this year, Turkey managed to raise its exports to the country by 9.3 percent, according to figures provided by ?a?layan during his speech.

The minister highlighted the asymmetry of the relationship and said that last year Turkey showed a $661 million trade deficit in its trade with Mexico, which ?a?layan suggested would become more balanced.

Obama vetoes ITC ban on some AT&T-compatible iPhones and iPads (Update: Samsung responds)

Remember that ITC ban on the import, sale and distribution of some AT&T-compatible iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, iPad 3G and iPad 2 3G models Samsung won in June? The Obama administration has officially vetoed the ruling. A letter issued to Irving A. Williamson, Chairman of the U.S. International Trade Commission ITC, explains that the decision considers the ban's "effect on competitive conditions in the U.S. economy and the effect on U.S. consumers." If you'll recall, the case focused on patent 7,706,348 for encoding mobile communications, which Samsung claimed the aforementioned devices infringed upon. The administration notes that despite his decision on the ruling, Samsung will still be able to "pursue its rights through the courts" (i.e. monetary compensation, etc.). In a statement to All Things Digital, an Apple representative notes:

We applaud the Administration for standing up for innovation in this landmark case. Samsung was wrong to abuse the patent system in this way.

You can peruse the full four-page memo for yourself at the source link.

Update: Courtesy of 9to5Mac, here's Samsung's response:

We are disappointed that the U.S. Trade Representative has decided to set aside the exclusion order issued by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). The ITC's decision correctly recognized that Samsung has been negotiating in good faith and that Apple remains unwilling to take a license.

Phil Davis eats a lot of shots, pulls out controversial decision victory over Lyoto Machida

Judging controversies seem to follow the UFC everywhere it goes, but Saturday's victory by Phil Davis over former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, raised more than a few eyebrows.

After the second round of the three-round bout, Davis' corner urged him to go hard, believing it would be difficult to beat Machida, a Brazilian, by decision in Brazil.

But though Machida seemed to control the third round, it didn't matter. Davis won by scores of 29-28 on all three judges' cards and won a unanimous decision over the division's No. 1 contender.

Machida seemed shocked when the call went against him.

"I really don't know what they are judging," Machida said in the cage. "Just listen to the crowd. They're telling you what is happening."

UFC president Dana White was shocked, too.

In a telephone interview with Cagewriter once the show ended, White said he was not pleased with the way Machida fought.

"Machida definitely won that fight, definitely," White told Yahoo! Sports. "But that's his fault. He knows MMA judging sucks. It's terrible, it's [expletive], but he went out there and let him do it. I can't remember whether it was the first or the second, but Machida had that combination where he threw all those punches and ran across the cage and ended with that knee. That's when he's really good. But he wants to stay back and be a counter puncher and wait and fight cautiously.

"He's got the abilities, but he just doesn't bring it. He loves the counter and he got taken down at the end of both rounds."

Davis took Machida down near the end of each of the first two rounds, but Machida seemed to control the pace of the fight and stuffed numerous takedowns. Fight Metric gave Machida a 17-16 edge in significant strikes landed.

Davis, who was ranked seventh by the UFC prior to the fight, was ecstatic.

"The late takedowns help, but that's part of my strategy," Davis said. "I get takedowns and work all the time. It's part of what I do."

Morgan Stanley sets aside $199 million more for litigation costs

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Morgan Stanley set aside an additional $199 million for expected litigation expenses in the second quarter, much higher than the $4 million increase it reported in the year-ago period, the bank said on Friday.

So far this year, Morgan Stanley has built up an additional $270 million in litigation accruals, compared with $21 million in the first six months of 2012.

The bank did not outline what the increased reserves were specifically for, and does not say what its overall litigation reserves are. Morgan Stanley detailed the additional accruals, as well as updates on several ongoing legal proceedings, in its 10-Q quarterly filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Chevron second-quarter earnings drop on cheaper oil, maintenance

Fri Aug 2, 2013 9:28am EDT

(Reuters) - Chevron Corp (CVX.N) posted a larger-than-expected decline in quarterly profit on Friday as a fall in oil prices knocked oil and gas production earnings and its U.S. refining unit slowly recovered from a refinery fire a year ago.

Second-quarter net income fell 26 percent to $5.37 billion, or $2.77 per share, from $7.21 billion, or $3.66 per share, a year earlier. Analysts, on average, expected $2.96 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Chevron, the second-largest U.S. oil company produced 2.58 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, down from 2.62 million bpd a year earlier. The company is targeting 2.65 million bpd for this year, and growth of 25 percent in output by 2017.

In the second quarter, Chevron's exploration and production earnings from outside the United States fell 10 percent to $3.87 billion, with operating expenses higher and the average sale price for liquids down to $94 per barrel, from $99 a year before.

U.S. earnings from refining and marketing declined more than 83 percent, with refinery crude input falling by 114,000 barrels per day to 814,000 bpd, mainly due to the fire at its Richmond, California, plant last August. The damaged unit there started up in April.

Chevron shares fell 1 percent to $125.06 in pre-market trading on Friday.

Muldrow Man Grieving Loss of Pets and Home | 5NEWSOnline.com

Posted on: 10:36 pm, August 2, 2013, by Aubry Killion, updated on: 10:46pm, August 2, 2013

Bill Bowman?s Muldrow home caught fire (August 2) with several of his dogs inside his mobile home. Bowman?s brother was one of the first responders to the fire.

?He was broken hearted because he lost the dogs. The house can be replaced but the dogs can?t be replaced,? said, JR Bowman.

Several of his dogs living in the home died from smoke inhalation. One of his pets, Dee Dee, made it out alive.

?I think it was a relief to him that they died of smoke inhalation and they weren?t burned alive but he was still broken hearted,? said Bowman.

Firefighters on scene said they responded to a call around 5:22 pm.

?We could see flames from approximately two, three miles away,? said Muldrow Fire Fighter, Jesse Chandler.

Chandler said the fire was so large multiple crews were sent to the mobile home.

?The home will be a total loss; half of it?s burnt up,? said Chandler.

Firefighters said the fire started in the back bedroom of the home.

Bowman?s brother said his dogs were like his children.

?Right now the home is the least of his concern because he loved the dogs like most people love their kids,? said Bowman

One of the owners longtime friends of more than 20 years came out to show support for his friend and help salvage what he could.

?Bill?s been a friend of mine for 25 years. He?s just a super great guy, and he?s a real animal lover,? said Tim Blalock.

Blalock said his friend is a survivor and tragedy is no stranger to him.

?He?s lost his parents too, I know he will hang in there.?

Fortunately Bowman said his home is insured but as he tries to pick up the pieces of his home he will never forget his animals named Lady Bug, Little Girl and Stinky.

A-Rod May Lose $100 Million if Banned

As Major League Baseball reportedly prepares to penalize Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez for his connection to defunct clinic Biogenesis, the New York Yankees' third baseman, baseball's highest-paid player, stands to lose millions.

Rodriguez, 38, earned $30.3 million from June 2012 to June 2013, mostly from his salary, according to Forbes. He ranks 18th overall on Forbes' list of the highest paid athletes in the world. He also has stakes in businesses and real estate holdings.

Rodriguez, who has dated actresses Cameron Diaz and Kate Hudson, is notorious for his high-flying lifestyle. His car collection includes a luxurious, black Maybach 57s, known to have a price tag of more than $400,000.

Though Rodriguez signed the two biggest contracts in baseball history -- $252 million with the Texas Rangers in 2000 and $275 million with the Yankees in 2007 -- he earns very little in endorsement deals.

Rodriguez did sign an endorsement deal with Vita Coco in 2011 even though he was in investor in that coconut water's biggest competitor, Zico.

Rodriguez could not be reached for comment. His attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

He previously had endorsement deals with Nike and Rawlings, but those companies dropped him in recent years, said Forbes' Kurt Badenhausen.

Badenhausen said Rodriguez's assets are "small potatoes" compared to his baseball income.

Watch: A-Rod Could Receive Lifetime Ban From Baseball

Despite being sidelined for the start of the 2013 season following hip surgery, Badenhausen said Rodriguez now has more than $100 million in future salary obligations on the line with the Biogenesis case.

"His endorsements have completely dried up and are almost certainly never coming back," Badenhausen said.

ESPN's Darren Rovell said Rodriguez' earnings will be affected based on whether he is suspended and for how long. A lifetime suspension would cut off his major source of income, but not his only source. He also has real estate holdings, a construction company, Newport Property Construction, and a Mercedes-Benz dealership in League City, Texas, near Houston.

"But he has his name on these things, and any other negative damage to his name could affect them," Rovell said.

The slugger poured millions into custom renovations at his nine-bedroom, Miami Beach, Fla., home, which he sold for $30 million this year. He bought it for $7.4 million in 2010.

If the league imposes a major ban on Rodriguez, such as a lifetime suspension, Rovell said, there will bound to be a major legal battle with not only A-Rod's legal team, but the Major League Baseball Players Association.

"Baseball has the strongest union of all major sports unions," Rovell said.

Collier: Blowout loss doesn't ruin a great week of baseball

For most of the past month, this rare five-game entanglement between the Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals loomed on the calendar like an ominous and perhaps even fateful crossroads, yet when it finally came around, both teams rolled into it with little evident apprehension.

The Pirates and Cardinals knew the one thing about this series that maybe we didn't care to know because it might have taken the fun out of it, that it would only turn out to be really significant if somebody swept it.

Despite the gathering of another massive North Shore crowd, this one carrying dollar store brooms and frothing to see St. Louis get skunked in a five-game series for the first time in 97 years (seriously, 1916), the Redbirds put a big fat purple 13-0 bruise on Clint Hurdle's pitchers Thursday night and got out of town with their dignity.

With their dignity, yes, but without their 11/2-game lead in the National League Central Division, which they turned over to the Pirates by losing four out of five.

Had the Pirates swept it and wound up ahead by 3 1/2, or had the Cardinals done the same and pushed the Pirates 6 1/2 games behind, then you might have had something both teams would point to in October as the place where so many things started to go right/wrong. As it is, in terms of relevant Central Division politics, this series will enjoy the approximate shelf life of a hard-boiled egg rolling down the aisle of a PAT bus.

Or something.

It's not like the Pirates haven't been in first place before, and it's not like the Cardinals are about to plunge into a dark depression at the prospect of being 1 1/2 games out with 55 to play.

But as theater, it was little else than the very best essence of the sport.

Baseball must ultimately be adjudicated, obviously, with pennants won, a World Series staged, a champion crowned and another city's heart ceremoniously broken on national television. But it says here that none of that is necessarily better than this, than these past five games, when nearly 130,000 people came out on four perfect summer nights in Pittsburgh and watched the best teams in baseball perform with purpose and passion.

The whole edge-of-your-seat, heart-palpitating-on-every-pitch brand of big-league ball can wait until October as the promised product of what dreams may come, but the game lives for the summer. This was a series that could not have been placed more perfectly than at the intersection of July and August. It was a series to savor, to relax, sit back, talk ball, have a dog or two and a brew or three, and to lament nothing except that PNC Park could be here for another 50 years and never produce a more perfect showcase.

In practical terms, the Pirates proved they could beat the very best competition in a variety of ways, shutting 'em out (6-0), outlasting 'em in 11 (2-1), spanking 'em hard (9-2), coming from behind (5-4), and proved beyond any doubt they are far from a perfect machine.

Oh yeah, 13-0.

In practical terms, Charlie Morton, the starter Thursday night, worked six shaggy innings to extend a funk in which he has now allowed 38 hits in 302/3 innings with an ERA of 4.98. He's no Brandon Cumpton.

The Cardinals, always glad to see Morton, lashed him for 10 hits in five innings. St. Louis is 8-2 all time against Morton. Against the Cardinals, his career ERA has swollen to 6.30.

If the Pirates have a part of their rotation squealing with dysfunction, the Cardinals are possibly solidifying theirs thanks to Joe Kelly, 25, who kept the Pirates hitless into the fifth and worked six shutout innings. Starting for only the fifth time in 2013, Kelly has allowed just one run in his past 172/3 innings.

No one figured him for the stopper when it came to the Cardinals' seven-game losing streak, their first of longer than three all season.

Nine games remain between these teams, six of them in St. Louis, the final one Sept. 8.

Should you be looking for the next fateful scheduling crossroads, the next ominous zombiescape dystopia, you might look past Sept. 8 to the season's horizon, because after that final Pirates meeting, the Cardinals might very well play the final 19 games of the season against teams with losing records.

Nineteen days of Brewers, Mariners, Rockies, Cubs, Nationals and, yes, more Brewers.

A lot will happen between here and there, and perhaps beyond, and maybe it will be more dramatic and more momentous and even more historic.

But it won't be better baseball than the baseball that filled this week.

Can't be.

Here Is Everything You Need To Know Before You Travel. | Content ...

Whether you're going to see those annoying in-laws or are taking an Alaskan cruise, you want to enjoy the ride. Take the time to plan your vacation according to this advice for a truly relaxing experience.

Don't bring extra valuables that you don't need. The more you take with you, the higher your chances of losing the items. Even worse, they could be stolen.

If you are traveling with your child, carry a photo of your child just in case he or she gets lost. It can be a very scary thing to lose your child. However, it can occur. If you have a picture of your child on you then this can come in handy if they ever end up getting lost.

When vacationing in a foreign country, be careful what you eat. If you have had severe reactions to certain foods, learn all the foreign words for those foods. Doing this, you can tell restaurants what foods you can't eat or at least be able to tell medical professionals what's wrong.

When embarking on a cruise, find a hotel nearby that has free parking, and spend the night before the departure. Ask the hotel's staff when it comes to parking deals even though none are published.

Try taking a mild sleeping aid during your red-eye flight. With all the unfamiliarity and noise of an aircraft, many people are unable to sleep on planes. Take a mild sleeping pill to get you through the flight. Nothing too strong, but enough to make you drowsy. Don't take any pills until after the plan has taken off. If there is an issue or delay you would be sleeping in the terminal!

Find out if you need a visa to get into the country you need to go to. Sometimes visas can take a long time to process so it is best to apply for one a long time before you are due to travel. Most foreign countries will refuse to let you enter if you do not have the appropriate visa.

Consider purchasing a yearly National Park Pass if you plan to visit more than a couple times a year. While the initial outlay is $50, they are valid for a one year term and give you open access to all national parks.

It is customary to tip any hotel staff that makes your stay easier. Standard tips are generally $1 for each piece of luggage, and $2-$5 for the housekeeper each day of your stay. Tipping will show your appreciation for their work, and will help you maintain a good relationship with hotel staff.

To adjust to a new time zone faster, stay awake until at least 8pm local time. Going to bed too early can keep you set to your natural time zone; that will make jet lag worse. You can get rid of your jet lag quicker by adjusting as soon as possible to the current time zone.

Pack a few small candles for your hotel stay. Candles can make a room smell better. It is romantic, relaxing and could help you sleep easily. The majority of candle manufacturers have smaller sized candles available, making them convenient to bring along when you travel.

You can conveniently create almost all your vacation and travel plans online. You can plan your trip on a travel site with little effort. Booking flights, hotels or rental cars can all be done on the Internet. Pictures and reviews of hotels are right at your finger tips. Don't forget to look for discounts when booking travel at the last minute.

When traveling in a foreign country, don't change your money at an exchange. There are other, easier ways to exchange cash for foreign currency. You can go to a bank ATM and get foreign currency. Besides being more convenient, ATMs tend to have more generous exchange rates than brick-and-mortar exchanges.

If you need a rental car when going on a trip with small children, make sure the car seats are packed. Use your own car seats when you rent a vehicle, you won't know if you the rental company will have them and if so, what kind of quality they'll be.

A tight budget is no reason to give up the idea of traveling for fun. If you follow the advice listed here, you will soon figure out a way to make your travel plans budget-friendly.

A lot of people don't know that they can actually save money by knowing some insider information about how to get cheap flights. If you are interested in this information, then you should check this out

U.S. Department of Justice wants ludicrous restrictions placed on Apple, iBooks

U.S. Department of Justice proposes solution to Apple ebook price-fixing

The U.S. Department of Justice has proposed a solution to address Apple's ebook price fixing. The remedy places restrictions on how Apple makes deals with publishers, including the immediate termination of their current deals with five publishers, and forces Apple to change policy with regards to ebook apps linking to external stores for at least two years. Additionally, the order would have the court appoint an external antitrust monitor at Apple, says the DOJ release:

The monitor, whose salary and expenses will be paid by Apple, will work with an internal antitrust compliance officer who will be hired by and report exclusively to the outside directors comprising Apple?s audit committee. The antitrust compliance officer will be responsible for training Apple?s senior executives and other employees about the antitrust laws and ensuring that Apple abides by the relief ordered by the court.

Apple was found to have consipired to fix ebook prices on July 10. Apple has said that they plan to appeal the ruling, though their chances of success are very slim. The five publishers that had also been sued by the DOJ had previously settled last year.

One element of the DOJ's proposed remedy which is of particular interest is the ebook apps policy change. Currently, apps are not allowed to link to external stores, including ebook apps like Amazon's Kindle or Barnes & Noble's Nook app. The Kindle app recently found a workaround for this issue, but if the solution is accepted by the court, Apple will be forced to allow the Kindle, Nook, and other ebook apps to link to their companies' stores to allow customers to compare prices easily.

This proposal by the DOJ, along with others will be presented to the court in a hearing held later this month.

Mexico and Canada declared part of US homeland by Senate maps

Published time: August 02, 2013 17:36 As an aide holds up a poster, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) speaks during a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee July 31, 2013 on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC (AFP Photo / Alex Wong)

Sen. Dianne Feinstein referred to the US, Canada and Mexico as ?the Homeland? at an NSA Senate briefing on Wednesday, presenting a map that united the three nations as one.

At a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting held to acquire details on the National Security Agency?s mass surveillance programs, Sen. Feinstein (D-Calif.) made a geographic mistake in which she united three large countries into one. The error went by without comment during the briefing, but generated a significant response upon closer examination of the map.

During the briefing, Feinstein, who serves as chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, was defending the NSA?s data-collection programs when she pulled out a world map that identified North America as the ?Homeland?. The newly-declassified diagram showed terror activity that the NSA had allegedly disrupted throughout the world.

Committee Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) (C) speaks as ranking member Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) (L) and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) listen during a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee July 31, 2013 on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC (AFP Photo / Alex Wong)

But while Europe, Africa and Asia were correctly identified by their continent?s name, countries of North America were all encompassed as a new mega-nation.

?Now, the NSA has produced and declassified a chart, which I?d like to make available to all members. It has the 54 total (terror) events,? Feinstein said. ?And it shows the events disrupted? 13 in the Homeland, 25 in Europe, five in Africa and 11 in Asia.?

Although it might be easy to brush off the map as nothing more than a mistake made by a staffer, a writer at The Atlantic suggested that it might indicate a potential NSA attempt at tallying thwarted attacks in North America to make anti-terrorism efforts in the US look more successful.

?Normally, this would be written off as a design goof, as one of the NSA?s (newly adept) graphics guys using a little more light blue than he ought,? writes the Atlantic?s Philip Bump. ?This being the NSA, we?re not inclined to offer that benefit of the doubt. Is this a way of blending in Canadian and Mexican terror activity disruptions (which, we?ll remind you, is different from actual plots interrupted) to give a larger sense of the NSA?s success at halting terrorism within our borders??

Whatever the reason for the NSA?s creation of ?the Homeland?, the spy agency has already been condemned for failing to respect the sovereignty of other nations through its extensive data-collection efforts.

Some people have taken to Twitter to sarcastically welcome Canada and Mexico to the United States.

?Earths newest continent. Welcome to the Homeland, Mexico and Canada!? wrote Twitter user Kat Capps.

?Are Canadians losing their sovereignty?? tweeted user Kevin King.

?We did it! Canada is now part of the American ?homeland,?? tweeted Canada.com, a site for ?spirited discussions on what?s important to Canadians.?

Investigation finds ?reckless? misconduct, carelessness at University of Utah lab

Science ? Eleven papers are suspect; two have been retracted, three corrected ? and more fixes may follow.

Researchers at a respected University of Utah lab "recklessly" mishandled and manipulated data in 11 papers published over the course of five years, according to a report released this week.

The problems went far beyond two papers about regulation of iron in the blood that were retracted from a scientific journal last year after a lab technician threw away notebooks, the investigation by a U. research oversight committee found.

The lead author on many of the suspect papers, assistant professor Ivana De Domenico, has been fired, and the head of the lab, veteran pathology professor Jerry Kaplan, has retired in the wake of the investigation. University officials are continuing to examine other papers produced by the lab and more corrections or retractions could be forthcoming.

Kaplan and current members of the lab did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Investigators listed 21 errors found in 11 papers published between 2007 and 2011. The problems all involved visual data, figures "published as if they reflected the results of laboratory experiments," according to the report.

The errors include images that were "intentionally manipulated to present false data," others that were "flipped or mislabeled," graphs that were "misleading" and "inverted," as well as dates and notes on film that were likely added several months after the work was done, according to the report.

The report faults "extreme carelessness" on the part of De Domenico and others whose names have been redacted from the copy of the report provided to The Salt Lake Tribune.

The problems appear to be the result of negligence rather than plagiarism or fabrication, said Jeffrey Botkin, associate vice president for research integrity at the U.

The research oversight committee "was not convinced there was an intention to mislead, but that the process was so reckless that ... the publication didn?t represent what was done," said Botkin.

In a written statement to The Tribune, released by her attorney, De Domenico reiterated that she didn?t purposely falsify or fabricate research and disputed the finding that she had committed accidental misconduct.

story continues below

De Domenico "maintains that she conducted her work as conscientiously as possible within the context of a very difficult work environment at the university," according to the statement, and she pointed to the report?s finding that the problems were part of a "larger pattern," rather than hers alone.

De Domenico, who noted she was trained in the lab, also asserted that the university deprived her of due process and other rights in the course of the investigation.

Kaplan?s lab has been "certainly, one of the most productive labs on campus," Botkin said, handling millions of dollars in federal grants and publishing regularly in top-shelf science journals. Kaplan, an assistant vice president for health science research, "has been a highly respected member of our community," Botkin added.

The issues, which a U. spokesman called "extremely unusual," first came to light in the fall of 2011, when editors at a journal where one of the papers was published expressed concerns about the data, later echoed by a former collaborator at another university.

The U.?s investigation started the following spring, around the time two papers were retracted from the journal Cell Metabolism. Other journals have since issued three corrections to other papers from Kaplan?s lab.

"I think that it is a matter, to some extent, of the zeal for science and the discovery, and folks get busy pursing the science and have lost the sense of the sort of oversight mechanism that should be in place," said Botkin. "Sometimes it?s a matter of poor oversight also ... oftentimes individuals think they already know the answer and the paper is just a validation to demonstrate what the right answer is."

The report said that the U.?s responsibility for the problems shouldn?t stop at Kaplan?s retirement and De Domenico?s termination.

Along with investigating other papers published by researchers in the lab, university officials are reaching out to other U. scientists to remind them of research rules and how to report problems if they see them.

Asked whether researchers need more oversight, Botkin said that academic journals could do more to ensure that images haven?t been manipulated. The university, he said, should "remind investigators collaborating on a project that they need to take a certain amount of responsibility to ensure that everyone?s work is the highest quality it can be."

The university will contact the editors of the journals where the six remaining papers were published, and the editors will decide with the authors what steps to take, Botkin said.

The problems could affect other scientists working on similar projects, but the work hasn?t been used in medical care or other applications that affect the general population, Botkin said.

Family home damaged after smoke alarms fail

A FAMILY claim they were forced to move out of their home after faulty smoke alarms failed to warn them a fire had started.
?

Fortunately the King family, including a 33-week pregnant mum and two young children, were able to get out it time.
?

But furious father Darren has criticised Cotman Housing Association for putting his family at risk and failing to help since the fire.
?

Firefighters were called to their terraced home in Ventura Drive, Colchester, on Sunday evening after the family noticed smoke coming out through the floor and the roof.
?

Firefighters tackled the blaze, which started in a cavity wall, putting out the flames about an hour and 40 minutes later.
But many of their belongings were ruined by the smoke and subsequent rain leaking into the home after the roof was damaged by the fire.
The family have also been to hospital after experiencing problems because of the fumes.
?

Mr King said: ?We spoke to the fire brigade and my wife has seen the midwife and they said it is not safe for us to be in the house because of all the particles from the smoke.
?

?I am disgusted with the housing association.
?

?Someone came around on Friday and said the smoke alarms were faulty and they would put in a report and since the fire they haven?t been helpful at all.
?

?You don?t realise when the fire is going up a cavity wall and now we can?t stay here because it is too dangerous.?
?

The family, including Darren, mum Jacey, six-year-old Jaden and four-year-old Harry, are currently staying with Jacey?s parents at their home in Abbots Road but think it could be weeks until they return.
?

Darren is also using up all his holiday time from work, which was supposed to be saved for the baby?s birth, to deal with the aftermath of the fire.
?

He added: ?The house now needs a total renovation, soft furnishings and everything.
?

?My wife is 33 weeks pregnant and can?t breathe in the fumes but the housing association are not interested in finding us somewhere to stay.?

A spokesman for Cotman Housing Association said: "The Association fully appreciates the concerns of the family and is doing all we can to? ensure their housing needs are addressed and their home is repaired quickly in order to enable them to move back in at the earliest opportunity."
