Alcoa and Chevron lead Dow Jones average down

NEW YORK (AP) ? The prospect of weaker earnings for Alcoa and Chevron pulled the Dow Jones industrial average down early Wednesday.

Alcoa, the aluminum company, beat Wall Street earnings estimates on Tuesday night but cut its demand expectation for the year, mostly because of a slowdown in China. Its stock fell 37 cents Wednesday to $8.76.

Chevron, the country's second-largest oil company, warned late Tuesday that slumping oil prices and production would cause earnings to be "substantially lower." It blamed Hurricane Isaac for disrupting production at a Mississippi refinery.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court also refused to block a $19 billion judgment levied against Chevron by an Ecuadorian court for pollution in the Amazon. Chevron's stock sank $4.22 to $113.12.

The Dow sank 60 points to 13,413 shortly after 11:30 a.m. Alcoa was the biggest loser among the 30 stocks that make up the average. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell two points to 1,439.

Stocks in the energy and materials industries, whose fortunes hinge on economic growth, slumped the most. Consumer staples headed in the other direction with the help of Yum Brands.

The parent of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and other fast-food chains said results from China stores should remain strong, even as the Chinese economy slows. Yum Brands jumped 9 percent, making it the top stock in the S&P 500. It gained $5.86 to $71.57.

In other trading, the Nasdaq lost one point to 3,064. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury rose to 1.74 percent, up from 1.71 percent late Tuesday.

The Dow and S&P 500 are down more than 1 percent for the week. The Nasdaq has lost more than 2 percent.

Alcoa's earnings report marks the unofficial start to the quarterly earnings parade, and this earnings season is expected to be the weakest in three years. Analysts project that companies in the S&P 500 will say third-quarter earnings shrank 1 percent compared with the same quarter of last year.

Among other companies making big moves Wednesday:

? FedEx gained 5 percent. The world's second-biggest package delivery company unveiled a restructuring plan Monday aimed at raising profits by $1.7 billion within three years. FedEx promised to shed jobs and underused aircraft. FedEx rose $4.70 to $90.25.

? Toyota Motor Corp. sank 1.5 percent after the carmaker recalled a total of 7.4 million vehicles worldwide for a for a faulty power-window switch, the latest in a series of recalls for Toyota. The recall announced Wednesday affects more than a dozen models produced from 2005 through 2010. Toyota's stock dropped $1.16 to $74.89.

2010 Korea bomb 'tests' probably false alarms, says study

ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2012) ? This spring, a Swedish scientist sparked international concern with a journal article saying that radioactive particles detected in 2010 showed North Korea had set off at least two small nuclear blasts -- possibly in experiments designed to boost the yields of much larger bombs. Shortly after, the pot was stirred with separate claims that some intelligence agencies suspected the detonations were done in cooperation with Iran. Now, a new paper says the tests likely never took place -- or that if they did, they were too tiny to have any military significance.

The new report, by seismologists at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, will be published later this month in the journal Science & Global Security, where the earlier paper also appeared.

It is generally accepted that North Korea has carried out at least two nuclear test explosions, in 2006 and 2009. The Lamont scientists studied both those blasts via the seismic waves they generated. They concluded that the second test -- thought to be in the range of about 2 to 4 kilotons -- was five times more powerful than the first, though still dwarfed by the weapons of established nuclear powers. (A kiloton equals the explosive energy of 1,000 tons of TNT.) The suspicions of more tests in 2010 were based on whiffs of radioactive xenon and barium detected in South Korea, Japan and Russia in May that year; but it was not until March 2012 that Lars-Erik De Geer, an atmospheric scientist with the Swedish Defense Research Agency, published the information, and suggested clandestine explosions of 50 to 200 tons as the sources. Several weeks later, a former high German defense official publicly suggested that the tests might have been done on behalf of Iran. Many experts quickly expressed skepticism, as there was no public evidence of seismic waves normally linked to such explosions; however, since then, tensions have continued to rise. In August, defense analysts warned that North Korea had made significant progress on a plant to produce highly enriched uranium, suitable for bombs. And lately, there have been increasing calls for pre-emptive attacks by the United States or Israel to keep Iran from developing a bomb.

"The recent claim of nuclear testing in 2010 has led to publicity that could be very dangerous at a time when so much belligerence is in the air," said Paul G. Richards, a coauthor of the new paper. "There could be consequences to a false alarm -- you could start a war." Richards and his coauthors, seismologists David P. Schaff and Won-Young Kim, say in their paper, "It is important to find confirming evidence for such a serious claim and thus build up support for it, or to find objective and contrary evidence and thus help make the case that the claim is invalid."

The paper makes a detailed case that no explosion anywhere near the size of that hypothesized in 2010 could have taken place. For one, the region is heavily seeded with some 100 seismic stations in both China and South Korea. Data from many of them are stored locally and difficult for outside scientists to acquire, but they include an open-access one in Mudanjiang, China that has in the past recorded high-quality signals in and around North Korea from earthquakes, small chemical explosions, and the nuclear tests of 2006 and 2009. Based on this data, the scientists say that no explosion of more than a single ton could go undetected -- and on the days of the purported tests, no such signals were seen.

A key qualifier, they say, is the assumption that an underground blast would be "well-coupled" with surrounding rock -- that is, not isolated in a hollowed-out cavity that would absorb much of the shock. Some scientists and politicians fear this could be used to hide significant tests; but Richards says the logistics of digging out a spherical cavern big enough to fool modern seismic networks -- never mind keeping such a vast excavation secret from spies and satellites -- have become near-impossible. He says that the very best North Korea could have done was to light what he calls a "nuclear firecracker" -- a wimpy puff that would do nothing to advance a weapons program.

The international community's ability to reliably detect even small nuclear tests has grown rapidly in the past decade, following the signing of the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty by over 180 nations. Since then, hundreds of new stations have been installed that detect not just seismic signals, but waterborne sounds, low-frequency sounds in the air, and releases of radioactive isotopes. Scientists are still learning how to interpret this new flood of data. In regard to the 2010 radionuclide detections, alternate explanations suggested by various scientists include a leak at one of the dozens of civilian nuclear-power plants operating around east Asia, or from a nuclear-powered vessel passing through.

The United States remains one of a handful of nations that has not ratified the test-ban treaty -- based partly on politicians' protests that instruments, including seismometers, cannot reliably pick up hidden tests. But, like a growing number of scientists, Richards says that technological advances and the increasingly dense network of monitoring stations have made those concerns outdated. The purported 2010 test is a good example, according to him. "The quality of monitoring has grown so high, nothing of military significance can go undetected," he said in a recent video from the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization. In March, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences released a detailed report to the same effect; Richards and Lamont seismologist Lynn R. Sykes were participants in that.

Richards and his colleagues have continued to work on the issue. In September in Washington, D.C., they presented workshops in monitoring advances to U.S. Senate staffers, and attendees at a session hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. They are also working on combing through the fast-growing archives of past seismic events around the world to refine methods of detecting any future nuclear tests. "Let us hope there will be very few in the future," said Richards.

ING did not disclose what the actual sales price was. The businesses include 1.5 million customers with ?13.4 billion of savings deposits and ?6.9 billion worth of mortgages. ING said in a statement Tuesday it was selling in order to "sharpen the focus of the bank."

ING added that the deal would marginally improve its solvency.

Anderson pitches A's past Tigers to avoid sweep

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? The Oakland Athletics will play another day in this improbable season full of remarkable rallies.

These A's never count themselves out ? down and doubted is their dogma.

Brett Anderson outdueled fellow postseason first-timer Anibal Sanchez and the upstart Athletics showed off stellar defense all over the diamond, avoiding another playoff sweep by Detroit by beating the Tigers 2-0 Tuesday night in their AL division series.

The A's cut their deficit in the best-of-five matchup to 2-1.

Coco Crisp, whose misplay dearly cost Oakland in Game 2, saved a likely home run by Prince Fielder with a leaping catch at the top of the center-field wall in the second inning.

"You see him hit it and you just kind of put your head down a little bit because you think you just gave up a homer," Anderson said. "Then you see him plow through there and catch the ball and it kind of kick starts you to go out there and make pitches."

Yoenis Cespedes hit an RBI single in the first inning and Seth Smith homered in the fifth. That was plenty on a night Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera, Fielder and the Tigers' high-priced offense were shut down by the low-budget A's.

Tigers 16-game winner Max Scherzer will try to close out the series in Game 4 Wednesday night against A's rookie A.J. Griffin. Detroit swept the A's in the 2006 AL championship series.

Fielder was the biggest victim of Oakland's spot-on defense, robbed three times. First by Crisp, Oakland's most experienced player whose blunder on Cabrera's fly allowed two runs to score in a 5-4 loss Sunday in Detroit.

"Not to be all over-confident or anything, I think I'm going to catch everything out there," Crisp said. "Obviously it doesn't happen that way ? duh Detroit, right?"

Crisp let out a big "Whoo!" after raising his arm to signal he'd made the grab.

"Coco's catch, the ball was out of the ballpark and it came back," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "The key to that play was he was playing deep and that enabled him to get into a spot to get up and make the catch. And it was a great catch, no doubt about it."

A's shortstop Stephen Drew made a tough play running to his left to stop Fielder's grounder in the fourth and then threw to first while still off balance and in motion.

Then, in the seventh, Cespedes cut over to make a diving catch on Fielder's liner to left field.

That delighted the yellow towel-waving sellout crowd of 37,090 in this blue-collar city.

"It's frustrating. But it's a good team you're playing," Fielder said. "They're going to make those plays, that's why they're here."

After Cabrera singled with one out in the ninth, Fielder grounded into a game-ending double play.

The A's own the lowest payroll in baseball at $59.5 million. Fielder is getting big money in Motown: $214 million over nine years.

Anderson, back on the mound for the first time since straining a muscle in his right side Sept. 19 at Detroit, worked quickly and showed no signs of a layoff or jitters in his first postseason start.

That's just not the way the A's have operated this year.

Last week, Oakland entered its final three-game series of the regular season needing to sweep the two-time reigning AL champion Rangers to capture the AL West ? and the A's did it, sending a stunned Texas team to the one-game wild card, which it lost to Baltimore.

A club with a majors-best 14 walkoff wins and countless whipped cream pie celebrations snapped the longest postseason skid in franchise history at six games. All of those against the Tigers, too.

The Tigers are trying to reach second straight AL championship series after losing last year's ALCS in six games to the Rangers.

Detroit captured the AL Central in Oakland last year and is hoping for another clinching party as soon as possible.

Anderson did his job to delay it.

He insisted he was healthy and ready to go ? and manager Bob Melvin took his pitcher at his word and gave him a shot in his biggest start yet. Anderson had shown plenty when he returned in August following a 14-month absence recovering from elbow-ligament replacement surgery and made six impressive starts.

Not feeling quite 100 percent, he allowed two hits, struck out six and walked two in six innings. He was on a pitch count of 80 and was done at exactly that, though was never told about it beforehand.

"I don't know how you could expect more than we got out of him tonight," Melvin said.

Next, the reliable bullpen took over.

Ryan Cook pitched the seventh, Sean Doolittle struck out the side in order in the eighth and closer Grant Balfour finished the four-hitter for a save. The A's staff pitched the 11th postseason shutout by the franchise, while the Tigers were blanked for the 13th time in the postseason.

The A's had lost five straight while facing elimination in the postseason, one shy of the longest active streak by the Twins.

But this group has defied expectations ever since the first full workout at spring training back in February when the A's lost third baseman Scott Sizemore to a season-ending knee injury. Opening day starter Brandon McCarthy took a line drive to the head Sept. 5 and needed brain surgery. Starter Bartolo Colon was suspended for 50 games in August for a positive testosterone test.

Oakland became the first team in major league history to win the division or pennant after trailing by five or more games with fewer than 10 to go. The A's were five back of the Rangers with nine left, then won their final six all at home with sweeps of Seattle and Texas.

Smith hit a towering drive to the deepest part of center field in the fifth for yet another timely home run for the A's, whose 112 longballs after the All-Star break led the majors.

"That's how you win postseason baseball games, with pitching and defense and timely hitting," Smith said. "We had that. We got two runs and that's all we needed. Anderson was great and our defense was, too."

Sanchez gave up five hits and two runs in 6 1-3 innings, struck out three and walked two.

NOTES: Smith hit his first postseason homer and third lifetime against Sanchez in 15 at-bats. ... At 24 years, 251 days, Anderson became the fifth-youngest pitcher in Oakland history to make his first career postseason start. ... Both Bay Area teams avoided elimination after the NL West champion San Francisco Giants won at Cincinnati earlier in the night. ... Oakland sold out for the eighth time this year and second straight ? the regular-season finale vs. Texas drew 36,067 ? including 1,000 standing-room only tickets and extra suite sales. It was the biggest crowd at the Coliseum since drawing 43,974 against the Yankees on Sept. 4, 2005, before the upper decks were tarped.

Pakistani girl on Taliban hit list shot outside her school

Gunmen hunted down young Malala Yousafzai at her school, shooting her in the head after she dared to criticize the extremists who are ravaging her country. NBC's Amna Nawaz reports.

By Amna Nawaz and Mushtaq Yusufzai, NBC News

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari ordered Tuesday that the young Pakistani activist who was seriously injured in a shooting by the Pakistani Taliban be sent abroad for medical treatment, the website for Pakistan's Dawn newspaper reported.

Malala Yousafzai, a 14-year-old Pakistani activist who won international acclaim for her work promoting peace, and two other young girls were shot and seriously injured Tuesday, police and hospital officials said.

Local police and hospital officials told NBC News that Malala was shot after leaving her school in the Swat region.

Official sources told Dawn that the single bullet, which hit Malala's head, had pierced down to her backbone.

?We have thoroughly examined her, she is in critical condition. The bullet traveled from her head and then lodged in the back shoulder, near the neck,? a doctor told the AFP agency, according to Dawn, requesting anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to media.

AFP

Soldiers take Malala Yousafzai, 14, to an army hospital after a gunman attacked her and two other girls in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Tuesday.

?Next three to four days are important for her life. She is in the intensive care unit and semi-conscious, although not on the ventilator,? he added, according to Dawn.

?In such a condition, she immediately needs a sophisticated surgical procedure, which is not possible in the country,? sources told Dawn.

Malala was nominated for the International Children's Peace Prize in 2011 for a blog she wrote under a pseudonym for the BBC.?She also won the National Peace Prize in Pakistan, was honored with a school named after her, and quickly became an outspoken critic of the Taliban in Pakistan and a public advocate for peace.

In the blog, she chronicled life in the Swat Valley under the brutal and oppressive rule of the local faction of the Pakistani Taliban, who carried out public floggings, hung dead bodies in the streets, and banned education for girls.

Obama her 'ideal' leader
In early 2011, the?militants had added Malala to their hit list.?

"We wanted to kill her as she was pro-West, she was speaking against Taliban and more important she was calling President Obama as her ideal. She was young but was promoting a Western culture in the Pakhtun populated areas," Ihsanullah Ihsan, the spokesman of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP said Tuesday.

Malala Yousafzai, pictured here at the age of 12 in March 2009, was undergoing surgery after she was shot twice Tuesday.

The Taliban had made a plan for killing her a year ago but were waiting for an opportunity, he told NBC News.

Malala was initially treated at the Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital, in Mingora, the main city of Swat, but was airlifted to a hospital in the larger city of Peshawar.

'New radicals': Pakistan's Generation Y battles to shape country's future

A?police official, quoting other students who witnessed the shooting, said some people came in a car and stopped in front of the school and then asked them to identify Malala.

"Since the students already knew about threats to Malala Yousufzai's life, therefore they said they didn't know her," the police officer said.

Americans ignore 'great risks,' travel to Pakistan to protest US drone strikes

The young girl's stark depictions of daily life in Swat -- as Pakistan?s army carried out a massive military operation against the Taliban in the area -- led her to become the first Pakistani girl nominated for the children's peace prize.

She began writing the diary for the BBC when she was just 11.

In?one posting on her BBC blog, she wrote: "My younger brother does not like going to school. He cries while going to school and is jubilant coming back home ... He said that whenever he saw someone he got scared that he might be kidnapped. My brother often prays 'O God bring peace to Swat and if not then bring either the U.S. or China here.'"

Denise Martino Starts Homeless South Florida Veterans on Path to ...

Operation Sacred Trust, ?OST,? funded through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, helps provide housing stability for homeless and at-risk Veteran families in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. OST is a collaborative effort of Carrfour Supportive Housing, PAIRS Foundation, Henderson Behavioral Health, and Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida. The program served more than 1,000 Veterans and their family members in South Florida since starting-up in September 2011, including ending homelessness for hundreds. FatherhoodChannel.com is pleased to profile some of the OST professionals on the frontline of ending homelessness for America?s Veterans.

What inspires you to serve Veterans?

My husband is a Veteran, my stepson is currently in the military, I also have a long list of family members who have served in the military (Desert Storm, Vietnam). I can easily understand?and relate to the unique needs of Veteran families, such as help with their physical and mental injuries, relationships, employment and/or navigating the benefits claim process.

Denise Martino

Denise Martino

What is a story serving a Veteran that stands out for you?

We provided a Veteran, young single mom, with money for rent. I had created a connection with her over the phone and asked to be present as we gave her the check.?She was so thankful and full of tears ? she had us all crying. She shared how she grew up underprivileged and wants to give her kids a better life. She said she was attending school and doing her best to raise her kids by giving them the life she never had growing up. It was very touching!

What?s your hope for the impact of your work?

My hope is to end homelessness among?Veterans; to make sure we connect the Veterans we assist with the benefits and services they need and deserve.

What?s one of the hardest lessons you?ve learned?

I did not realize we had so many homeless and low income and/or unemployed Veterans here in Dade and Broward counties. ?Through my many years of case management and social services experience,?I?ve?learned that the homeless population is one that society tends to want to hide away and isolate. In many ways this also applies to the Veteran homeless population.

Something else I?ve learned, with my stepson recently having been deployed to Afghanistan and how unemployment continues to be a problem here, I realize how a Veteran returning to civilian life can easily find themselves needing assistance from Operation Sacred Trust. For example, if a Veteran returns with a war related illness or injury, lack of skills, lack of resources and family support, it can lead to having many problems from relationships to financial. Luckily, my stepson has a loving home to return to as he figures out the next chapter of his life.

Pioneer anomaly solved? Interstellar travelers of the future may be helped by physicist's calculations

ScienceDaily (Oct. 9, 2012) ? Interstellar travel will depend upon extremely precise measurements of every factor involved in the mission. The knowledge of those factors may be improved by the solution a University of Missouri researcher found to a puzzle that has stumped astrophysicists for decades.

"The Pioneer spacecraft, two probes launched into space in the early 70s, seemed to violate the Newtonian law of gravity by decelerating anomalously as they traveled, but there was nothing in physics to explain why this happened," said Sergei Kopeikin, professor of physics and astronomy in MU's College of Arts and Science. "My study suggests that this so-called Pioneer anomaly was not anything strange. The confusion can be explained by the effect of the expansion of the universe on the movement of photons that make up light and radio waves."

Beams of radio waves were sent to and bounced off the Pioneer spacecraft to measure the probes' movement. The time it took for the photons to complete a round trip was used to calculate the spacecrafts' distance and speed. Kopeikin's research suggests that the photons move faster than expected from the Newtonian theory thus causing the appearance of deceleration, though the craft were actually traveling at the correct speed predicted by the theory. The universe is constantly expanding and this alters the Earth-based observations of the photons bouncing off the spacecraft, causing the Pioneer probes to appear to slow down.

"Previous research has focused on mechanical explanations for the Pioneer anomaly, such as the recoil of heat from the craft's electrical generators pushing the craft backwards," Kopeikin said. "However that only explains 15 to 20 percent of the observed deceleration, whereas it is the equation for photons that explains the remaining 80-85 percent."

Physicists must be careful when dealing with propagation of light in the presence of the expansion of space, noted Kopeikin, since it is affected by forces that are irrelevant in other equations. For example, the expansion of the universe affects photons, but doesn't influence the motion of planets and electrons in atoms.

"Having accurate measurements of the physical parameters of the universe help us form a basis to make plans for interstellar exploration," Kopeikin said. "Discerning the effect of the expansion of the universe on light is important to the fundamental understanding of space and time. The present study is part of a larger on-going research project that may influence the future of physics."

The study "Celestial ephemerides in an expanding universe," was published in the journal Physical Review D.

Iraq buys $4.2 billion in Russian weapons: document

GORKI, Russia (Reuters) - Russia announced on Tuesday it has signed $4.2 billion in arms deals with Iraq, making it the largest weapons supplier to the Middle East country after the United States.

The deals, disclosed in a Russian government document issued at a meeting between Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, give Russia a big boost at a time when the future of its arms sales to Libya and Syria is uncertain.

Iraq had been all but off limits for Russia's defense industry after the U.S.-led invasion of 2003 which ousted Saddam Hussein, one of Moscow's biggest weapons customers.

President Vladimir Putin had vocally opposed the invasion and Moscow has struggled to claw back a share of the markets in energy, arms sales and infrastructure projects in Iraq.

"After the fall of Saddam Hussein, it looked like the country was lost forever" as a Russian arms customer, said Ruslan Pukhov, director of the Russian security and defense think tank CAST. "This is absolutely sensational."

The contracts will help Russia maintain its position as the world's second-biggest arms seller after the United States, Pukhov said.

In Washington, the U.S. State Department signaled it was not overly concerned by the Russian deal.

"Iraq overall has initiated some 467 foreign military sales cases with the United States. If all of these go forward, it will be worth over $12.3 billion, so obviously our own military support relationship with Iraq is very broad and very deep," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told a news briefing.

The contracts were signed during visits to Russia by Iraq's acting defense chief in April, July and August, the document showed. It gave no further details and the state agency in charge of the weapons trade could not be immediately reached.

The Russian newspaper Vedomosti reported late last month that contracts worth $4.3 billion were being agreed ahead of Maliki's visit. It said they included deals for 30 Mi-28NE combat helicopters and 42 Pantsir-S1 mobile rocket launchers.

A spokesman for Russia's state-controlled arms exporter, Rosvooruzheniye, said it never discusses content of arms deals.

The contracts comprised the third biggest package of deals for Russian arms sales since the 1991 Soviet collapse, after a $7.5 billion agreement with Algeria in 2006 and a $6 billion sale to Venezuela in 2009, CAST said.

Russia delivered about $13.2 billion in weapons last year, said Konstantin Makiyenko, an expert at CAST.

Pukhov said the Iraq deals showed the government there "is ready to pursue an independent foreign and defense policy", but that the United States could have tacitly supported them to appease Russia, which scrapped a deal to sell air-defense systems to Iran citing U.N. sanctions over Tehran's nuclear program.

Russian officials also have said Russia lost about $4 billion in arms deals with Libya because of the fall of longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi, and the future of Russian sales to Syria is uncertain because of the conflict there.

Kremlin calls in top Russian protest leader for questioning

Experts say that the Kremlin's probe into Sergei Udaltsov ? launched after a documentary accused him of trying to undermine the government ? is meant to discredit him and other protest leaders.

Russian left-wing leader Sergei Udaltsov has been summoned for "questioning" by the Kremlin's powerful Investigative Committee on Wednesday, after a murky documentary film broadcast Friday on the state-run NTV network accused him of plotting to overthrow President Vladimir Putin using funds provided by a Georgian parliamentarian and anti-Putin business exiles in London.

Mr. Udaltsov predicted on his blog Saturday that the film was part of a Kremlin plan to charge him with treason, based on a new law that's working its way through the Russian State Duma that would redefine treason to include almost any political activist who works with foreigners against Russian national security interests as defined by the authorities.

"The existence of any instances of financing from Western intelligence and... of 'coup attempts' would lead toward the opening of highly publicized criminal cases against me," Udaltsov, a veteran left-wing street protester, wrote.

On Monday, the State Investigative Committee summoned Udaltsov to appear and explain the accusations made in the film, after receiving a letter from the deputy chairman of the Federation Council, Russia's Kremlin-appointed upper house of parliament, requesting it to do so.

The makers of the documentary film, "Anatomy of a Protest 2," are not named in the credits, but most experts say it was almost certainly made using surveillance footage of Udaltsov gathered by the FSB security service.

The grainy and shadowy film shows someone who resembles Givi Targamadze, chairman of Georgia?s parliamentary committee for defense and security and a close ally of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, talking in a smoke-filled room with a usually-obscured profile of someone who looks like Udaltsov. The Mr. Targamadze figure suggests a range of wild schemes, including seizing Russia's Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad, activating Chechen rebels to commit terrorist acts in Moscow, and doing "something" to disrupt Mr. Putin's 60th birthday jubilee (which passed peacefully on Sunday).

More substantially, Targamadze appeared to be offering Udaltsov financing of $50 million for protest activities, which would be contributed by disgraced Russian banker Andrei Borodin and other anti-Putin exiles living in London.

Luck rallies Indianapolis past Green Bay 30-27

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? All Chuck Pagano asked the Indianapolis Colts to do was focus on football.

Andrew Luck and Reggie Wayne did that ? and more to honor their ailing coach.

The rookie quarterback and veteran receiver connected at the most critical moments Sunday, including a 4-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds left to complete the Colts' second-half rally and stun Green Bay 30-27 on perhaps the most emotional day in Lucas Oil Stadium history.

"I'm sure we were all lying to everybody the whole week, trying to downplay it," Luck said after throwing for a career-high 362 yards. "I think we all went out there wanting to do it for Chuck more than anything else. To see all the emotions on Mr. Irsay's face, BA's, everyone in there, I think it's one of the greatest athletic moments I've ever been a part of."

It's a day nobody in Indy or around the league will soon forget.

Interim coach Bruce Arians, nicknamed BA, acknowledged he was fighting back tears when he spoke to reporters. From the sounds of it, so were Luck and Wayne.

The sometimes emotional team owner, Jim Irsay, sniffled as he spoke inside a silent locker room before dashing off dash to the hospital where Pagano is undergoing treatment for leukemia. He wanted to personally deliver the game ball to Pagano, who celebrated his 52nd birthday Tuesday.

"We know what kind of man we have down the street, fighting, fighting for his life, and winning the fight," Irsay said. "You guys doing this today, Bruce coming in, all you guys pulling together, Reggie being so close to Chuck going back for so long. Everyone in here knows how much that this means, and this ball is going right down the street."

Pagano made it perfectly clear Friday, in an emotional email to players and coaches, that he didn't want guys playing for him; he simply wanted the Colts (2-2) to play for themselves and match last season's victory total.

"Focus on being 500 by 4:30pm on Sunday. Nothing else," he wrote. "That has to be our mind set. 60 minutes, all you got, one play at a time! WIN!"

Turns out the players wanted this one even more for Pagano than he wanted it for them.

"I've got 12 years of (special) games," said Wayne, who has known Pagano since the two were at the University of Miami together in the late 1990s. "But this did mean a lot, just with the whole deal with how the week's been going. You know, I talked to coach Pagano and he wanted us to win so bad. Is it a high? Yeah. I don't necessarily have one other than the Super Bowl game. But it's up there."

Team officials honored Pagano by hanging signs that read (hash)Chuckstrong behind each goal post and wore lapel pins with orange ribbons on a white background.

Luck and Wayne showed their support in another way.

The No. 1 draft pick was 31 of 55 throwing with two touchdowns and one interception, and ran for a TD, too.

Wayne finished with 13 receptions for a career-high 212 yards ? the second-highest total in Colts history behind Hall of Famer Raymond Berry in 1957. And he wore the orange gloves, instead of the traditional pink ones for breast cancer awareness month, because that's the color for leukemia patients.

"I just wanted to do something, you know, for Chuck," Wayne explained. "I had some equipment guys make some calls. If they (NFL officials) fine me, they fine me, I really feel like that would be a terrible thing to do, but if so, so be it, I'll go ahead and take the fine and do it for Chuck."

It was a wild finish to an emotionally-charged week in Indy that began with Monday morning's announcement that Pagano had been diagnosed with leukemia after players left for their bye week.

Green Bay (2-3) had a chance to force overtime with a 51-yard field goal. But Mason Crosby's attempt went left with 3 seconds to go, setting off an emotional celebration on the Colts sideline.

"I thought they (Colts) played well," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "Obviously, a tough week for them. I thought they played with a lot of emotion, a lot of energy. Frankly, I'm more focused on my football team and my football team is not playing the way we are capable of playing."

Pagano knew the motto all week would be to win one for the coach.

On Friday, he set out to change that speech ? a message Wayne and Luck took personally, especially after falling into a 21-3 halftime deficit.

In the second half, the Colts dominated.

Luck threw an 8-yard TD pass to Dwayne Allen and set up Adam Vinatieri for a 50-yard field goal to make it 21-13 midway through the third quarter. He then ran it in from 3 yards out with 18 seconds left in the third quarter to get the Colts within 21-19.

A few minutes later, Vinatieri hit a 28-yard field goal to give Indy its first lead, 22-21.

But Aaron Rodgers got Green Bay's offense back in sync in a hurry.

Alex Green ran 41 yards on the Packers' first play, and Rodgers threw an 8-yard TD pass to James Jones on the next one to give the Packers a 27-20 lead with 4:30 to go. Rodgers was 21 of 33 for 243 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

All the Packers had to do was stop Luck one more time to clinch it.

Luck and Wayne wouldn't allow it.

With the clock ticking down and anxious fans hoping and praying they could get this win for Pagano, Luck converted two third-down passes to Wayne, then scrambled for a third third-down conversion before, fittingly, spotting Wayne for the go-ahead score.

"Chuck's instilled a lot in us," Wayne said. "His whole motto since day one, the first meeting has been team team, team, team. Nothing else. So we've wanted to do it every week as a team. That's all we practice, that's all we preach."

NOTES: The Packers lost three starters during the game ? running back Cedric Benson (ankle), defensive tackle B.J. Raji (ankle) and tight end Jermichael Finley (right shoulder). McCarthy did not have immediate updates after the game. ... Colts defensive end Robert Mathis left with a knee sprain and did not return after trying on a brace. ... Wayne now has catches in 100 consecutive games and passed college and pro teammate Edgerrin James for No. 2 on the Colts career list for yards from scrimmage. ... Packers receiver Donald Driver played in his 197th career game Sunday, breaking a tie with Bart Starr for second in team history.

9 Things You Should Know Before Intermittent Fasting

These days, everyone is all about intermittent fasting. The talk centralizes around the physiological and psychological benefits of skipping meals, like not having to carry around twelve Tupperware containers filled with six meals to last an eight hour shift. And how it increases insulin sensitivity, which, when combined with matterful training, creates an ideal?environment?for partitioning. (Read: more muscle gained, less fat gained.)

Yes, fasting ? of all sorts of durations ? is something I?m just about two years of experimentation into. And while I?ve seen incredible physical gains, there are some ?things? fasting does that few people talk about. Some of these ?things? are good. Others, bad.

You live and learn, as they say. But I just wish someone would have told me the following 9 things before embracing an intermittent fasting lifestyle.

People think intermittent fasting means you can eat anything in infinite quantities.

Not so much.

Overall caloric intake stays the same, but since there?s usually a reduced meal?frequency, the size of meals increase to?accommodate? Most former fasters are those that used to eat six, eight small meals daily. When they turn to intermittent fasting, it?s more like two, three meals daily.

For those that eat a lot of food, these two ? three meals?must be hearty.

Nate Green recently released a pretty cool experiment he did with his Precision Nutrition team and Martin Rooney. Check out the website:?Bigger Smaller Bigger. On the first day of the ?bigger? phase, Nate complained about having to eat four pieces of toast and porridge for breakfast.

For pieces of toast?

After two years of intermittent fasting, eating four pieces of toast feels like eating one Ritz cracker.

Here?s what I ate for dinner the other night: chicken, meatloaf, rice, potatoes, vegetables. Yes, that?s a ?big? meal. But if you?re a faster that?s relatively lean and looking to add muscle, you?re going to be cramming some food into your mouth.

?Wait, what do you mean you don?t drink coffee? All big time intermittent fasting dudes drink it. It?s like a rite of passage.?

That?s what I told John Romaniello after he told me he didn?t really drink coffee.

Years ago, I downed coffee before doing fasted morning aerobic work. Every sip forced a gag reflex.?Today, I can?t live without the stuff. Addiction is an understatement. And it feels?oh so good.

A comical, yet fairly accurate, look at intermittent fasting is such: skip breakfast, drink coffee instead, have your first meal at lunch. In addition to coffee having some physiological effects on mobilizing fat in a fasted state, it also fights hunger ? something most people used to eating a big breakfast need.

Over time, it becomes less of a drink and more of a meal. And then you suddenly become one of those idiots standing in line at Starbucks salivating over the stuff, even though a few months prior you couldn?t understand why anyone with a semblance of sanity would buy Starbucks.

I used to be one of them: people that whine and cry without breakfast.

?I?m so hungry, blah blah blah.?

Well, those people get annoying. Not because they?need breakfast or anything, but because they can?t live without hunger for more than five minutes without erupting into emotional depression.

Shows you how lucky some of us are, living most of our lives fed plentifully.

I?m glad I?m not one of those whiners anymore. There?s something serene about being OK with a little rumble in the stomach.

Right now, I eat two meals per day. I?want to eat three, but I can?t. I blame it on the Warrior Diet.

Created by Ori Hofmekler, the Warrior Diet, in its simplest use, is eating one gigantic meal at night. I tried this for two weeks. That?s all. Just two weeks. My life has never been the same. Everyday becomes Thanksgiving. You want more and more and more, and you find yourself eating even though you?re stuffed to the gizzards. You get used to being either absolutely full or?absolutely?empty.

After stopping this one meal scheme, smaller meals don?t sustain you ? they just make you hungrier. The only thing you think about is when the next meal is.

(This makes ?cheat meals? especially dangerous, as you often find yourself overeating to the point of?vomiting. It isn?t fun.)

Over time, I?ve broken free from this. But my current diet (you can find the old one here: The Diet to End All Diets), is still a?manipulation?of the Warrior Diet. Most of my calories are condensed into one bigger meal late in the day.

Surprisingly, despite the cited turmoil,?I love eating this way. I learned how to cope with smaller meals (and even eat one or two of them per day, depending on the day) and not?over stuff?myself. It?s working out nicely with my lifestyle and physique, so perhaps the glass is half full?

After you get over the whiny, ?Wahh I?m hungry, I can?t function,? phase, morning fasting is awesome.?You?re alert. You?re energetic. You?re ready to get shit done. Since I depend on my brain to function at a pretty high level, this is awesome.

Part of me wonders whether or not this is just a crackpot theory though. I think this benefit gets boosted because the opposite ? being stuffed ? is like a coma for creativity and energy. And when you?re fasting and eating bigger meals, you?re going to be stuffed often. This leaves the fasting window the most productive?feeling.

Regardless, I enjoy it. And it works for me and my schedule.

Combine the fast with coffee for creativity on steroids. +10 EXP.

My beginnings with intermittent fasting weren?t?glamorous. With a broken foot, I couldn?t stand upright for more than a few minutes without blood pooling to my foot and painfully expanding it inside of its cast. How was I supposed to cook? Answer: I wasn?t. So, I?didn?t.

Prior to this, I loved breakfast. When I was an intern, driving down to sports facilities at 5:30AM, I woke up at 4:30AM just to make myself a gigantic breakfast.

But the timing of breakfast no longer appeals to me. (The food does though. I always eat breakfast for dinner.) From fasting and getting accustomed to eating bigger meals, breakfast becomes a bigger meal. And since bigger meals curtail energy and creativity, you feel like garbage from the beginning of the day onward.

Who wants that?

Goku ate big meals. Just sayin??

+++++

Got anymore? What are some unexpected things that came about on your fasting journey? I?d love to hear them below, so drop some (spirit) comment bombs.

And be sure to let others know what they?re getting into with fasting. Use some of the nifty buttons on the side or bottom of this post to do your crew justice.

94% Looper

Grade: A+ (96%)Movies like "Looper" don't come around as much as they should. Usually we get massive amounts of action where reality goes out of the window for the two hour runtime. Then there are movies where they are intelligent but lack the excitement to keep audiences interested. Writer and director Rian Johnson has found a way to mix these two genres into "Looper" a futuristic action thriller that is both entertaining and intelligent at the same time.In the year 2074 time travel will be invented and used by the mob. When they want to get rid of someone, they send them back to the year 2044 where a Looper, a paid assassin, kills them and disposes of the body that technically doesn't even exist yet. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is one of these assassins. He is wealthy, a junky, and follows basically the same pattern everyday: wake up, kill, collect money, drugs, sleep, repeat. But when his older self (Bruce Willis) is sent back in time and escapes Joe's attempt of assassination, his life turns for the worst as he tries to kill his older self while trying to figure out what Old Joe is planning to do.What's so impressive about "Looper" is its way of being entertaining without guns blazing. When Joe and Old Joe meet in a diner in one of the scenes, there is a lot of suspense when no gun is present on screen. Joe is trying to do his job and "close the loop" while Old Joe is trying to tell his younger self why he is 30 years in the past. It's the part of the movie where the audience will choose which Joe to root for. It's one of "Loopers" great scenes. When guns do go off, its great entertainment. Blood splatters, windows are blown to pieces, and homes are destroyed. What's great about this type of action that it finds ways to blend sic-fi action with old styled action that we are use to seeing. In one instance, since Bruce Willis is in the film, it kind of became like a "Die Hard" film and Willis just kills hordes of people in seconds. It was great to watch and, most of all, it wasn't too much. The action in this film is just a plus. The story and the characters are the real highlights of the film. Granted that the action sequences are amazing, some are just magnificent to watch, but the story and the characters keep the movie going even after the final gun battle. The acting is superb mainly because of the two leads. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception) doesn't look quite the same as many will expect. They put on a lot of make up to make him look like a younger Bruce Willis. While they don't quite get it right and takes time to get use to, it's a good try nevertheless. Still, Gordon-Levitt's performance is exceptional. He does try his hardest to act like Bruce Willis in a lot of ways. Most of the time it works when he is talking to other characters in the film. Bruce Willis is also great as Joe. Even though he acts like John McClain from his "Die Hard" films for most of the movie, it's nice to see him play as a bad*ss in other action films."Looper" may be the best action thriller of the year. It's intelligent, gripping, entertaining, and full of action. People who want to see a unique action movie have to give "Looper" a shot. It's two hours long but you only need five minutes to realize that this is going to be one entertaining thriller.

Angry Vegan: A Vegan Canadian Thanksgiving in St. Louis Park, MN

Possibly one of the best thanksgiving weekend?s I have had in a long time. Sticking to my promise I made a few days ago, I made vegan Thanksgiving dinner for my boyfriend, his roommates and a couple of their friends. I have served a few things here and there to people that are non-vegan, but this is the first larger dinner?s I have done all on my own. Usually I spend thanksgiving either on my own eating junk food and drinking tequila or I will join someone else?s thanksgiving dinner. Last year I made some vegan dishes for my sister?s family and they went over pretty well, however, there was always plenty non-vegan dishes for them to choose from and mine often was overlooked by most. This year it was all on me. I made dinner for 7 people and made the full meal with a dessert. Most of what I made I had tried and posted before, but I did?

make something new so that I could post a new recipe on here. One thing that I tried I guess is a standard dish at Thanksgiving in the US and one of Tony?s favourites. I had never had or made green bean casserole before. I had definitely heard of it, but it just never seemed to show up at holiday meals in my life. Apparently it is a must have when spending a holiday with Tony, so I was not going to skip it. I?didn't?actually know how easy green bean casserole is. Basically you make a cream of mushroom soup, add some garlic, green beans and herbs and then bake it with lots of fried onion on them. Honestly, I think I will need to make that one again. To me, it is not a standard holiday dish, so I see no reason to save that for special occasion.

Since I was calling this my thanksgiving challenge, I had to set some goals. This time, because I was serving food, not only people that?aren't?following a vegan diet, but to a group that I think would not have held back if they?didn't?like it.? My goals were:

  1. ?Get everyone at the table to admit that Thanksgiving dinner can be vegan and delicious
  2. To have no one attempt to call KFC because my food didn't cut it.
  3. Bonus:?Get someone to agree that vegan Thanksgiving is yummier than non vegan Thanksgiving

Results?? It was a great success. Everyone (except Tony, which i will let slide) finished their plate. No one called or went to KFC (I say call because they deliver here, but apparently not in the US) and while no one admitted that my meal was better, everyone really liked everything. Nothing was left at the end except potatoes, but only because we made a ton of them. Tony actually went vegan all weekend with me. It was really nice to have someone eating like me for a couple days. At home, I have no vegetarian or vegan friends or family. Most of the time it?doesn't?bother me at all, but sometimes I miss being able to share meals with people. I always seem to get special meals while everyone else eats their ?normal food?. I honestly had no faith that he would make it the couple days, but he did and I think without a lot of trouble. We even went out to a restaurant that had little on the menu that we could eat, he ate hummus which normally is a no-go and he was by my side every step of the way with the big dinner. He helped me work out the menu, he came with me to get the groceries and even bought some of it and he helped with all the cooking. In exchange he had full control of the TV. We watched more football than I think I ever have watched in a weekend and he got pick of the movie on Saturday night.? I honestly am not sure I could have done it without him. I had a lot of fun in the kitchen all day. I forgot how much more enjoyable cooking with someone else can be. I just hope he had a good day too. I think he did. I kind of wish now I could be back there for American Thanksgiving, though I think I would have a much harder time convincing people to have a fully vegan dinner on their holiday. This was more of a practice round for them.

Back to the food. I made a few dishes on here that I haven?t posted before, so this will be a longer post. I am kind of making up for the fact that I?didn't?get to posting this yesterday. I had to fly home right after dinner and?wasn't?home until really late!

First thing, Green bean casserole. So, so good. Even more surprising, I?hadn't?even tried fried onion before! I had to ask others how close it was to the original recipe. Not exactly the same was the consensus, and I think mostly that is attributed to the nutritional yeast flakes, but a very suitable alternative. Constructive criticism from Tony was that it really should be soupier than what mine turned out to be and I think that would be an easy fix and also maybe a personal preference? I kind of liked the consistency. If it was soupier than what it was, it would have mixed into other things on the plate and I much prefer things separate. The recipe below is how I made it, so adjust the flour and the milk as necessary to get it to a consistency you want

So, what did I end up making? Here is the final menu that was served and following that is the recipes of anything I haven?t posted before.

  • Mash potatoes ?- See below
  • Candy Carrots ? See below
  • Saut?ed, zucchini and mushrooms (Thanks Matt!)
  • Green Bean Casserole ? See below
  • Chickpea Turkey ? Click here for recipe
  • Veggie gravy ? Click here for recipe. I used regular flour and real veg broth
  • Pumpkin Surprise ? Click here for recipe
  • Lots of white wine ? No recipe, but Pinot grigio was very nice with this meal, I consumed almost a whole bottle!

Angry Vegan Green Bean Casserole *Serves about 4-6 people about 30 minutes to make

Pre-heat the oven to 350 F. Get a small sauce pot and turn on to about medium. Add the butter and soy sauce and melt it to combine. Chop up all your veggies and while the butter is melted and add everything except the flour and the fried onions. Cook for a few minutes to get everything warmed up. Now add the flour slowly while stirring with a fork or whisk. This will ensure that you don?t get to many lumps. If you dump it all in at once, you might. Bring the mixture to a boil and then bring down to a low simmer and cook for about 5 minutes so the flavours combine.

Before pouring, make sure you have the consistency you want. It will thicken a bit in the oven, so add a little more milk if you prefer a soupy casserole. You may want to add a little extra seasoning too. Now get a pie dish or a small casserole and pour the mixture into it. Top it with all of the fried onions. You want it to cover the whole top and there is no such thing as too much.

Bake in the over for about 25 minutes and let it cool 5-10 minutes before serving.

Angry Vegan Mashed Potatoes
  • Red skin potatoes (yellow are good too, just avoid russet) I used about 6, but use whatever you think the group will eat.
  • 3 Tbsp butter
  • 1/3 of a concentrated veggie broth
  • 1 ? 2 Tbsp of the potato cooking water
  • 1/8 cup of chopped Italian parsley
  • 2 cloves minced garlic (If you can use roasted garlic, do it!)
  • Dash of paprika
  • Salt and pepper

For this recipe, first get a large pot and boil water. Chop the potatoes into 6th or 4th the smaller they are the faster they cook! I leave the skins on, but that is personal preference.

Once the water is boiling, add the potatoes and cook them well. I go about 15 min. Drain the potatoes, saving a little of the cooking water. Not transfer to a bowl or back to the pot and add the remaining ingredients. Get out the potato masher and go crazy. I tend to leave mine a little chunky, but again, personal preference. You can also use electric beaters if you like them super smooth. If they look dry, add more butter or water or some milk. Taste and adjust the seasoning as necessary.

Most of the other recipes are online, so I have added the links so you can access quickly. What did I end up serving?

*Serves 4-6

  • One bag of baby carrots (I used a smaller bag, use what your group will eat.)
  • 3 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • ? tsp salt

Easiest recipe in the world, but I find that some people don?t know how to do this. So I am here to be one of the probably many that have let this secret out. First, boil the carrots and get them about a minute past cooked. For me that is about 10-12 minutes. You want the soft enough you could mash them, but it would take a little muscle to do so. Once done, strain them and put them back t the pot. Turn off the stove, but put them back on the same burned. Add the remaining ingredients cover with a lid and shake them up and toss them in the pot so the butter melts and everything is coated. Let them sit for about 3-5 mins, but watch them in case the burner is too hot. If the sugar is starting to cook (or burn) get them off the heat. That?s it! Serve immediately.

I am so glad the cook day is over, but it felt really good to cook for a group of people. I really hope they have me back sometime to do it again sometime. Also, even though I am not a huge football fan, I have to say it was the perfect background to making this dinner. I think that may end up being transferred into my holiday traditions from now on.

Now, holidays are over. Boyfriend time is over and back to regular life. I am happy to be going home, but I am seriously really sad to be leaving. I never thought Minnesota would grow on me as fast as it did. I can?t wait to go back.
