Blueant Supertooth 3 Bluetooth Speakerphone [accessory review]

Blueant Supertooth 3 Bluetooth Speakerphone

Being safe while driving is pretty darn important. Distracted drivers are such an issue that the NTSB wants all cell phone use to be banned while driving, and even y'all, our faithful readers, admit to texting while driving. While a Bluetooth speakerphone certainly doesn't mitigate all of these issues, it can certainly help to alleviate some of them. Today, we're taking a look at the Blueant Supertooth 3 Bluetooth Speakerphone.

Small and discreet, the Blueant Supertooth 3 Bluetooth Speakerphone aims to bring a big sound in a small package, all while offering a stated 15 hours of talk time and 800 hours of standby time. Blueant uses some "Digital Signal Processing" to give incredibly clear call quality and microphone, but in my experience, the quality isn't anything to phone home about. It's not bad, but it's not mind-blowing.

The microphone has a little niggle in that it cuts off the very beginning and end of your phrases. This makes total sense to me (since those are typically the softest parts), but even with the windows rolled up and? the stereo off, the issue persisted. The promise of eliminating noise, even while the car is traveling, has loud engine noise, or while the windows are down seems unfulfilled.

Touching the green button while you're all paired up gives you the option to choose your favorite voice dialer on your phone, and surprisingly enough, the stock voice dialer worked better than both Vlingo and Vlingo InCar. This is mostly because voice dialer goes straight to listening for your command, whereas Vlingo and its InCar variant both open the full app, then? want you to touch a button onscreen, before they'll listen for a command. With the stock voice dialer, I had no misdials, so I can say the microphone picked up names quite well.

The Supertooth 3 attaches to your visor using a metal clip and magnets attached to the actual speakerphone. I'll admit, this is pretty brilliant. The metal clip is small and unobtrusive, giving you enough flexibility with placement. The magnets on the back of the speakerphone are strong (it won't come unlatched, even if you're driving over bumps), and when you've parked, you can easily remove it from the clip to hide (if that's your thing).

Overall, the Blueant Supertooth 3 Bluetooth Speakerphone is good. It's not bad, but it isn't great, either. If you're looking for a solid Bluetooth microphone, this one won't steer you wrong, but for the price, there's probably some higher quality devices you could pick up.

We've got a picture gallery after the break.

US tuna show Fukushima pollution

Pacific Bluefin tuna caught off the coast of California have been found to have radioactive contamination from last year's Fukushima nuclear accident.

The fish would have picked up the pollution while swimming in Japanese waters, before then moving to the far side of the ocean.

Scientists stress that the fish are still perfectly safe to eat.

However, the case does illustrate how migratory species can carry pollution over vast distances, they say.

"It's a lesson to us in how interconnected eco-regions can be, even when they may be separated by thousands of miles," Nicholas Fisher, a professor of marine sciences at Stony Brook University, New York, told BBC News.

Fisher and colleagues report their study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

They examined the muscle tissues of 15 Bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) taken from waters off San Diego in August 2011, just a few months after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

These were animals whose parents would have spawned in Japanese waters and spent one to two years locally before heading to feeding grounds in the eastern Pacific.

Professor Nicholas Fisher was 'stunned' to find the radioactive signal in bluefin tuna.

All the fish examined in the study showed elevated levels of radioactive caesium - the isotopes 134 and 137.

Caesium-137 is present in seawater anyway as a result of the fallout from atomic weapons testing, but the short, two-year half-life of caesium-134 means the contamination can be tied directly to Fukushima. There is no other explanation for the isotope's presence.

The measured concentrations were about 10 times the total caesium radioactivity seen in tuna specimens taken from before the accident.

As a control, the team also examined Yellowfin tuna, which are largely residential in the eastern Pacific.

These animals showed no difference in their pre- or post-Fukushima concentrations.

The research is likely to get attention because Bluefin tuna is an iconic species and a highly valuable fishery - thousands of tonnes are landed annually.

But consumers should have no health concerns about eating California-caught tuna from last year, the team says.

The levels of radioactivity are well within permitted limits, and below those from other radioisotopes that occur naturally in the environment, such as potassium-40.

"The potassium was about 30 times higher than the combined radio-caesium levels. If you calculate how much additional radioactivity there is in the Pacific Bluefin tuna caught in California relative to the natural background - it's about 3%," said Prof Fisher.

The scientists even calculated how much radioactivity might have been present in the fish before they swam across the Pacific (it would have fallen over time) and figured it could have been 50% above background levels; but, again, this would still have met the legal requirements for safe consumption.

Tuna caught in the coming months will be subjected to new tests. These animals would have spent much longer in Japanese waters and so conceivably could have a very different pollution load.

The team also believes the investigation should be extended to other migratory species that frequent Japanese waters.

Fukushima pollution is potentially a very useful tool to trace the origin and timing of animal movements. The ratio of caesium 134 to 137 could be used like a clock to work out when and how long a particular migration took.

"This information might be useful in conservation efforts or in managing fisheries," said Prof Fisher.

Technological savvy part of senior's drive to help others

ST. CHARLES ? Brian Ricketts had no trouble falling in love with robots.

After all, as he tells it, robotics have become an essential part of his life.

?There aren?t many people that can say they have a microprocessor in their leg,? Ricketts said, with a sly grin.

For as long as he can remember, Ricketts, a graduating senior at St. Charles North High School, has been fascinated by computers, the technological devices they power and the way they run.

At the age of 7 or 9, he began programming computers.

And those speaking with the young man or his mother, Julie Ricketts, of St. Charles, easily could be overwhelmed by the tales they might share of the tinkering Brian has done with household appliances and devices.

His mother noted, for instance, that his favorite toy when he was 2 years old was a surge suppressor.

Lately, those urges have turned to video games, which Brian creates himself, and gaming systems, which he might take apart and rewrite some code to make it do things it otherwise could not.

He reprogrammed a Microsoft Xbox Kinect system to allow users to ?fly? a virtual aircraft by moving their hands or speaking commands.

?It?s how I like to spend my free time,? Ricketts said.

So when the opportunity arose for Ricketts to join the competitive robotics team, PWNAGE Team 2949, sponsored by St. Charles manufacturer Genesis Automation, he did not think on the decision too long.

?I used to be in the Boy Scouts, and I tried piano lessons,? said Ricketts. ?But then I found robotics. And I thought, ?This is where I belong.??

Ricketts joined the team in his senior year, becoming one of the later members of a group that is interested and skilled in engineering, computer programming and other disciplines related to robotics.

The team takes its robots to regional competitions against those designed by other high school teams in task-based contests.

Teams were judged this year on their robots? abilities to move about a playing court, pick up foam basketballs and throw them through small basketball hoops.

Ricketts helped program the robot and said he loved every minute of the work and the competition.

Marsha Brown, technology and engineering instructor at St. Charles North, said Ricketts? infatuation with robotics should not be a surprise to anyone.

?There are things I?m learning from him,? Brown said. ?With the programming, and the things he?s able to do, it?s just nuts sometimes.?

In a class project earlier this year, students were asked to create a machine that could accurately launch ping-pong balls.

Ricketts? team created an accurate launcher. But then they went further, making their machine mobile.

?It did shock me when it moved around the room, because no one had told me,? Brown said.

Ricketts still laughs about that project.

?You should have seen the look on her face,? he said, chuckling.

Brown said Ricketts? penchant for exceeding expectations, along with his knowledge and ability, is what sets him apart.

?He is just so knowledgable about these things,? Brown said. ?So passionate and so driven.?

Ricketts, however, demonstrated his drive in more than just robotics projects or at-home tinkering.

At age 6, he was diagnosed with cancer in his left leg. Despite treatment, the cancer spread to his knee. Ultimately, doctors amputated his leg at the thigh.

Not until about two years ago, after a fight that lasted almost a decade, did doctors declare the cancer in remission.

In the years since the amputation, Ricketts learned to walk with a prosthesis, including a recent model that includes technology to help prevent him from falling.

?So I guess you can say I have experience with a robot on my knee,? he said with a grin.

Ricketts enrolled at DePaul University and will attend classes in the fall. He will major in computer science.

He said he has not decided yet how he wants to use his technological abilities, although he did mention a fascination with virtual reality and autonomous automobiles. And he wasn?t averse to defense applications, he said.

?That would be kind of cool, maybe working with drones,? Ricketts said.

No matter what he does, Ricketts said he wants his work to focus on one thing:

?I want to make technologies to make people?s lives easier. It?s so important to me.?

Guinea-Bissau rambles on, despite coup

BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau (AP) ? Campaign banners from an election that was violently interrupted still hang in the main thoroughfare of this steamy capital, a reminder that a stable government is far from the country's grasp.

Guinea-Bissau was just weeks away from holding a presidential runoff election when soldiers attacked the front-runner's home in April and arrested him along with the country's interim president. To the 1.5 million residents of this tiny, coastal nation, it spelled yet another upheaval in a history full of them.

No leader in nearly 40 years of independence has finished his time in office in Guinea-Bissau, a former Portuguese colony on Africa's western coast that has long been plagued by coups.

It comes perhaps as no surprise then that people here are complacent about the latest move by the junta. While the international community has loudly condemned the latest power grab, Bissau-Guineans have had little time to mourn yet another aborted attempt at establishing democracy, worried instead by how to make ends meet during their country's latest political spasm.

A lone sign hangs from a pedestrian overpass in downtown Bissau urging: "Mobilize yourselves! Demonstrate! We are a Democracy!" Most, though, are simply doing their best just to walk across that bridge to make a living each day.

Public workers didn't receive their salaries last month on payday, just after the coup. It's still unclear whether anyone will receive their salaries for May, and the hardship compounds life for those who depend on others getting paid.

Cadidjoto Seide, 28, supports her three children by selling a local milk dish along the roadside. In the months before the coup, she could sometimes make up to 5,000 francs ($10) a day, though much of that would go toward her transport costs. Since the coup, she's lucky to make 1,500 ($3), she says.

"It's really difficult at the moment just to survive," she says, watching commuter buses whirl by her stand in the main market downtown.

The April coup began on a Friday afternoon, just 17 days before the country's runoff election. The first round of voting had largely been described as free and fair, and former Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Jr. was leading by a wide margin, making his victory all but sure. By the night of April 12, the military had blocked off the roads to the candidate's house, and were lobbing grenades at his villa.

Now Gomes has fled the country, and it appears less likely each day that he will ever return.

The country's chances of ridding itself of military intervention are slim, given a booming cocaine trade that has turned Guinea-Bissau into a narcostate, fueled by trans-Atlantic drug shipments bound for Europe. Key members of the military have been named as complicit in the trade, including several army and navy chiefs who are now on the United States' "drug kingpin" list. The infusion of illicit cash has emboldened an already bloated army. Drugs, observers say, played a role in the recent coup.

"All the intelligence Portugal possesses clearly indicates that one of the factors behind the coup was drug-trafficking," Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Portas told reporters in Lisbon after meeting with Gomes, who exiled himself there.

"Either Guinea-Bissau becomes a state based on the rule of law, or it will be held ransom by a certain military clique that is open to the drug trade," said Portas.

Gomes told Portuguese radio station TSF that the international community must ostracize the coup leaders by imposing sanctions. Foreign pressure "has to be made to produce results." He added that he had unofficial information that a coup was brewing, but armed forces chiefs "categorically denied" they were planning an uprising when he confronted them. He added that he was not afraid to return to Bissau, but more than six weeks after the coup, the candidate is still an ocean away.

The election was clearly a vote some did not want him to win. Observers say Gomes had become a divisive figure within national politics long before the run-up to the election. Then when military leaders feared Gomes was secretly trying to overhaul the military with help from Angolan soldiers, they burst into action and arrested him.

Even West African regional mediators are backing a one-year transitional government that does not include him in it.

Critics believe the plan by West African regional bloc ECOWAS to now support the junta-initiated transitional government all but legitimizes the military coup. But ECOWAS Commissioner Salamatu Hussaini-Suleiman, has told the U.N. Security Council that immediately restoring the constitutional order that existed before the coup could lead to civil war.

In an effort to put the country back on track, ECOWAS this month began sending a contingent of peacekeepers, who will replace the Angolan troops formerly stationed here, whose presence had become a source of conflict with the military at large.

For now, it seems that the military has gotten away once again with meddling in the country's politics. In 2009, soldiers assassinated then-president Joao Bernardo "Nino" Vieira, in an unsolved murder that was also rumored to have been linked to the drug trade.

There is next-to-no military presence in the streets of Bissau, which have turned to a river of red mud since the first storms of the rainy season. The army does not need to patrol the streets, because despite the posters encouraging an uprising, people are too beaten down to stand up to the latest military incursion.

In Guinea-Bissau, citizens seem willing to give the junta or a transitional government a chance ? if it means restoring some economic stability.

Carlos Hussein Ajau, 62, has lived through it all: Portuguese colonialism, the war for independence, the country's civil war and its successive coups and political assassinations. The last few weeks have been difficult for his business ? no one even has money to change.

"The situation is not good, but we in Guinea-Bissau are used to it," he says.

Irritable bowel syndrome linked to bacteria in gut

Friday, May 25, 2012

An overgrowth of bacteria in the gut has been linked to Irritable Bowel Syndrome in the results of a new Cedars-Sinai study which used cultures from the small intestine. This is the first study to use this "gold standard" method of connecting bacteria to the cause of the disease that affects an estimated 30 million people in the United States.

Previous studies have indicated that bacteria play a role in the disease, including breath tests detecting methane ? a byproduct of bacterial fermentation in the gut. This study was the first to make the link using bacterial cultures.

The study, in the current issue of Digestive Diseases and Sciences, examined samples of patients' small bowel cultures to confirm the presence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth ? or SIBO ? in more than 320 subjects. In patients with IBS, more than a third also were diagnosed with small intestine bacterial overgrowth, compared to fewer than 10 percent of those without the disorder. Of those with diarrhea-predominant IBS, 60 percent also had bacterial overgrowth.

"While we found compelling evidence in the past that bacterial overgrowth is a contributing cause of IBS, making this link through bacterial cultures is the gold standard of diagnosis," said Mark Pimentel, MD, director of the Cedars-Sinai GI Motility Program and an author of the study. "This clear evidence of the role bacteria play in the disease underscores our clinical trial findings, which show that antibiotics are a successful treatment for IBS."

IBS is the most common gastrointestinal disorder in the U.S., affecting an estimated 30 million people. Patients with this condition suffer symptoms that can include painful bloating, constipation, diarrhea or an alternating pattern of both. Many patients try to avoid social interactions because they are embarrassed by their symptoms. Pimentel has led clinical trials that have shown rifaximin, a targeted antibiotic absorbed only in the gut, is an effective treatment for patients with IBS.

"In the past, treatments for IBS have always focused on trying to alleviate the symptoms," said Pimentel, who first bucked standard medical thought more than a decade ago when he suggested bacteria played a significant role in the disease. "Patients who take rifaximin experience relief of their symptoms even after they stop taking the medication. This new study confirms what our findings with the antibiotic and our previous studies always led us to believe: Bacteria are key contributors to the cause of IBS."

Researchers discover drug destroys human cancer stem cells but not healthy ones

Thursday, May 24, 2012

A team of scientists at McMaster University has discovered a drug, thioridazine, successfully kills cancer stem cells in the human while avoiding the toxic side-effects of conventional cancer treatments.

"The unusual aspect of our finding is the way this human-ready drug actually kills cancer stem cells; by changing them into cells that are non-cancerous," said Mick Bhatia, the principal investigator for the study and scientific director of McMaster's Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute in the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.

Unlike chemotherapy and radiation, thioridazine appears to have no effect on normal stem cells.

The research, published today in the science journal CELL, holds the promise of a new strategy and discovery pipeline for the development of anticancer drugs in the treatment of various cancers. The research team has identified another dozen drugs that have good potential for the same response.

For 15 years, some researchers have believed stem cells are the source of many cancers. In 1997, Canadian researchers first identified cancer stem cells in certain types of leukemia. Cancer stem cells have since been identified in blood, breast, brain, lung, gastrointestinal, prostate and ovarian cancer.

To test more than a dozen different compounds, McMaster researchers pioneered a fully automated robotic system to identify several drugs, including thioridazine.

"Now we can test thousands of compounds, eventually defining a candidate drug that has little effect on normal stem cells but kills the cells that start the tumor," said Bhatia.

The next step is to test thioridazine in clinical trials, focusing on patients with acute myeloid leukemia whose disease has relapsed after chemotherapy. Bhatia wants to find out if the drug can put their cancer into remission, and by targeting the root of the cancer (cancer stem cells) prevent the cancer from coming back. Researchers at McMaster have already designed how these trials would be done.

Bhatia's team found thioridazine works through the dopamine receptor on the surface of the cancer cells in both leukemia and breast cancer patients. This means it may be possible to use it as a biomarker that would allow early detection and treatment of breast cancer and early signs of leukemia progression, he said.

The research team's next step is to investigate the effectiveness of the drug in other types of cancer. In addition, the team will explore several drugs identified along with thioridazine. In the future, thousands of other compounds will be analyzed with McMaster robotic stem cell screening system in partnership with collaborations that include academic groups as well as industry.

"The goal for all of the partners is the same ? to find unique drugs to change the way we tackle and treat cancer," he said.

The research was supported by grants from the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute (CCSRI) and the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation (MEDI)'s Ontario Consortium of Regenerating inducing Therapeutics (OCRiT).

"This large scale research endeavor would have been impossible without the active support and vision of the Canadian and Ontario governments along with private donors," said Bhatia.

Romney Slow to Engage in the Battle for the Hispanic Vote

The stage is set for an epic battle over the Hispanic vote in the presidential election, but so far, President Obama is crushing the competition.

The president has already invested $1 million in Spanish-language media over the last five weeks. The campaign is airing about half a dozen television and radio spots in three toss-up states where a growing Hispanic population could swing the outcome: Florida, Colorado, and Nevada. The ads star Hispanic community leaders talking about how the president?s health care and education reforms have affected their lives.

In contrast, presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney has spent only about $13,000 on Spanish-language media since he clinched the nomination. He quietly launched his first ad in Spanish last week with only $3,000 worth of television time in Raleigh, N.C., a battleground state with a burgeoning but relatively small Hispanic population. Another $10,000 in air time was purchased this week, according to media trackers.

?For Romney to go up with such a limited Spanish media buy is like watering the desert," said Democratic strategist Freddy Balsera, who advises Obama on Hispanic outreach. He said the campaign?s Spanish-language ads will expand to other states and continue airing until November.

While Obama?s ads are specifically targeted at a Hispanic audience, Romney?s Spanish-language ads are exactly the same as his ads in English, only translated into Spanish. A narrator asks, ?What would a Romney presidency be like?" and promises tax cuts, more jobs, and the repeal of Obama?s health care law.

The stark differences between the two campaigns in the tone and breadth of their initial Spanish-language advertising comes as polls show Romney trailing far behind among Hispanic voters. The latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Telemundo poll of Latino voters found Obama sitting on a 34-point lead.

?Romney?s window of opportunity is still open, but I would advise them to ramp up their Spanish-language media as soon as possible and make it continuous," said Jennifer Korn, executive director of the Hispanic Leadership Network, a Republican-leaning group. ?It would also be smart if they did a few tailor-made advertisements for the Hispanic community. That doesn?t mean he?s sending a different message, but he?s showing he understands the community."

To be sure, the election is more than five months away, and there?s plenty of time for Romney and the super PACs backing him to roll out a Spanish-language media blitz. The Republican National Committee has promised an unprecedented outreach and has dispatched Hispanic directors to six battleground states: Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Virginia.

?We?re just getting started," said Stuart Stevens, a top Romney strategist. ?These are day-to-day decisions." Asked why the Spanish-language ads are not targeted at a Hispanic audience, Stevens said, ?Hispanic voters care about these issues, about jobs and trade and the economy and the deficit."

Polls certainly bear that out. The economy is the top issue across the board. Romney, a former corporate executive, aims to reach Hispanic voters -- who have suffered disproportionately from the economic downturn -- with his broader message about creating jobs.

But highlighting a central difference between the two parties, Democrats argue that the harsh stance Romney took against illegal immigration in the Republican primaries will hamstring any Hispanic outreach. Romney attacked his former rival, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, for backing college tuition breaks for the children of undocumented workers, and he suggested that "self-deportation" would take care of the illegal immigrants already here. The former Massachusetts governor has spoken little about immigration since he became the presumptive nominee and began reaching out to an audience much broader than the GOP?s conservative base.

Romney?s speech to the Latino Coalition on Wednesday -- his second appearance before a Hispanic audience since he became the presumptive nominee -- was focused on education and didn?t mention immigration at all. He has declined to take a position on a proposal by Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, one of the most prominent Hispanic elected officials in the country, to offer legal status but not citizenship to the children of undocumented workers who attend college. Rubio also addressed the audience of business owners on Wednesday in a speech that touched on a number of topics related to the economy and the Hispanic experience, including his revised version of the Dream Act.

?You don?t have to talk about immigration every time you go in front of a Latino audience, but you have to talk about Latinos," said Ana Navarro, who advised former Republican nominee John McCain on Hispanic issues. ?Romney got panned for that in the Hispanic press. Every demographic wants to be acknowledged and courted."

Conventional wisdom says a Republican candidate who wins 40 percent of the Hispanic vote will win the White House. McCain only got 32 percent in 2008. Still, it?s possible that the Romney campaign is eyeing paths to victory that don?t require him to do much better than McCain did among Hispanic voters, as long as he wins Hispanic-rich Florida and Arizona and keeps up his advantage over Obama among white voters.

What?s more, voter registration in the Hispanic community is not keeping up with the population boom. Registration has dropped off 5 percentage points since 2008, and the drop-off is even more pronounced in swing states like New Mexico, Nevada, and Florida. Hispanic turnout in 2012 may not match 2008, when Obama ran an unprecedented grassroots campaign in size and scope. He made history, too. ?They had lightning in a bottle last time, and they?re not going to have it this time,?? said Republican pollster Ed Goeas.

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Telemundo poll found only 68 percent of Latino voters say they are highly interested in the upcoming election, compared to 81 percent of all voters.

Goeas sees an opportunity for Romney among Hispanic voters, particularly among men. A recent nationwide survey he conducted with Democratic pollster Celinda Lake found that 54 percent of Hispanic voters approved of Romney personally, compared to 42 percent who disapproved. ?While Obama might win Hispanics across the board, there are certain subgroups that will be interested in the Romney campaign,?? Goeas said.

No wonder Obama has launched a nationwide, bilingual program called GottaVote.org that the campaign describes as a "one-stop shop" for voting information. The initiative is a response to new laws passed in a number of states that require voters to present additional identification at the polls. Critics say the new laws will disproportionately affect minorities, who were crucial to Obama's 2008 victory.

?The evidence strongly suggests that President Obama is on track to receive roughly the same supermajority of the Hispanic vote that he did in 2008," said William Galston, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. ?Less clear is whether Hispanic turnout will be as high as it was four years ago, or whether the administration?s failure to deliver on the promise of immigration reform will put a lower ceiling on the Hispanic vote this time."?

The president has also drawn criticism from Hispanic activists for a record-setting number of deportations. "He has a lot of ground to make up with Hispanics, so he needs to be advertising in Spanish early," said Noe Garcia, a Hispanic Republican consultant who worked for President George W. Bush and the national party. "He's lost a lot of credibility in the community."

Bottom line: The battle for the Hispanic vote is far from over. But whether Romney intends to truly compete remains to be seen.
