A crowded world's population hits 7 billion (Reuters)

LUCKNOW (AlertNet) ? Wrapped in a white blanket, Nargis Yadav lies in the arms of her mother in a small rural clinic in north India -- one of half a million babies born around the world on Monday that will push the global population to the milestone of seven billion.

The U.N.-declared landmark underscores the challenges faced by many countries in providing for the growing numbers of people on an already over stretched and crowded planet.

Nargis was born in the populous state of Uttar Pradesh, one of the poorest regions in India, a country that could soon overtake China as the world's most populated nation.

Her parents, poor villagers who earn just over $100 a month, say they want her to go to school and be successful in life, but aid workers say this will be an uphill struggle, not only for her but others like her in the developing world.

"The child will face a lot of challenges," said Sona Sharma, director for advocacy and communications at the Population Foundation of India.

"Getting proper nutritional food, clean drinking water and even basics such as medical care such as immunisations to help her survive the first few years will be challenging."

With the world's population more than doubling over the last half century, basics like food and water are under more strain than ever, say experts, and providing for an additional 2-3 billion people in the next 50 years is a serious worry.

Water usage is set to increase by 50 percent between 2007 and 2025 in developing nations, while food security remains a challenge with 925 million people going hungry.

To feed the two billion more mouths predicted by 2050, food production will have to increase by 70 percent, the U.N.'s Food and Agricultural Organisation says. But climate change may be the greatest impediment to meeting this target, say experts.

Growing numbers of people on earth is also resulting in rapid urbanisation, placing serious strains on towns and cities as migrants move from poor rural areas to richer urban centres.

"The issue of population cannot be seen divorced from the aspect of resource or energy footprint," said Parvinder Singh, head of communications for ActionAid India.

"The largest drain continues to be in the West which have traditionally consumed, and continue to, massive volumes of resources because of a life-style and purchasing power that far exceeds that of so-called high population poorer countries."

Demographers however point out that in richer nations, fertility rates have nosedived, resulting in declining numbers of people and an imbalance between the working population and retirees who need expensive social safety nets.

Experts say policies geared to population challenges need to be more targeted.

"Where population is shrinking, we need family friendly policies. Where numbers are growing, we need policies to ensure women have access to family planning," said Babatunde Osotimehin, head of the U.N. Population Fund, adding 215 million women want reproductive health services but do not have it.

"If governments do not act, we will put further strains on the resources that we have."

How to Create a Fake Identity and Stay Anonymous Online [Evil Week]

How to Create a Fake Identity and Stay Anonymous OnlineYou don't need to have evil motives for wanting to fake your identity or go incognito online; for many people, it's a matter of privacy and avoiding spammers and scammers. Thankfully, there are a great many tools for staying anonymous online. Here are a few of the best.

The Browser's Incognito Mode

The private browsing mode in Google Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers records no information about your browsing, including form data you enter, files you download, or history of pages you visit. It's handy for many things beyond porn. To launch a window in private browsing mode, use these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Chrome and Opera: Ctrl+Shift+N
  • Firefox, Internet Explorer: Ctrl+Shift+P

For Safari, go to Safari > Private Browsing.

What about mobile devices? Use an alternative mobile browser that will clear your browsing history for you automatically, such as our pick for best web browser on iPhone, Atomic Web Browser, or Android browser top pick, Dolphin.

Private Browsing Tricks

If you want to open your browser in private mode all the time, add a simple switch to your browser's shortcut.

We've also previously mentioned a Firefox extension called Private Browsing Window, which starts a new private browsing window in Firefox without closing your old ones.

Beyond Private Browsing: How to Clean Everything

Even with private browsing mode, traces of your browsing session still stays behind on your computer, however, such as DNS lookups and Flash cookies. Here's how to get rid of those sorts of bits and really browse without leaving a trace.

Proxy Servers and VPNs

Although private browsing mode is great for preventing sites from writing trackable cookies and other info to your computer, it doesn't completely make you anonymous. If you want the most assurance that others won't know who you really are, you'll want to use a proxy server and/or a virtual private network connection so you can appear to be someone and somewhere else.

The free Tor software is one of our favorites for anonymizing our online sessions. It routes web requests through multiple tunnels, preventing sites from knowing who or where you are.

If you want to set up your own secure secure, encrypted system to access on the go, you can do this usingHamachi and Privoxy, tunneling traffic using your own home computer.

Another alternative is previously mentioned Windows app CyberGhost VPN, which is free for up to 6 hours of surfing or 1GB of downloading.

Disposable Email Addresses and Anonymous Email Sending

Disposable email address services hide your real email address and keep the spam out by giving you a temporary email address that forwards to your real one. There are so many different disposable email services to choose from, and we've mentioned quite a few. Spamgourmet is one of the earliest services and still great. You might also like Trashmail, which as we mentioned before, offers Firefox and Chrome extensions for convenience.

When it's time to send an email message or SMS, use a tool like previously mentioned Sharpmail.

Fake Identity Creators

Trying to stay anonymous can be difficult with all the forms websites require you to fill out. You can make up fake information yourself or, better yet, use something like previously mentioned Fake Name Generator to create a realistic fake ID that'll fool web forms.

Looking to disappear and establish a new identity in real life? We've got some excerpts from How to Disappear that can help you formulate a plan to ditch Big Brother and disappear forever. Photo by gaelx.

Autistic boy found alive 6 days after vanishing

An 8-year-old autistic boy was found alive Friday, nearly six days after he wandered away from his family while walking in a wooded park.

Robert Wood Jr. was found in a fetal position in a creek bed at a quarry about 20 miles north of Richmond around 2 p.m., Hanover County Sheriff David Hines said. Wood was in good condition, but was taken to a Richmond hospital where he was reunited with his family.

The boy was found about one mile from North Anna Battlefield Park, where he disappeared while on a walk with family on Sunday.

Wood had been the focus of an intense search attracting more than 1,000 volunteers some days and assisted by professional search-and-rescue teams.

Woods parents thanked the community and searchers.

"Robert is a very strong and determined little boy. We never gave up hope that he would return home safe," Robert Wood Sr. said in a statement.

Hines said search teams also never gave up.

"There were sometimes that you just had to reach down and find that faith that you were going to find him. Whether it's appropriate or not for everyone, there is a God. He listens to prayers, and prayers were answered," he said.

Hines said the boy appeared to be alert and in good condition.

"I'm not a medical person, but I will say that he was serious but in good shape," he said.

Crews had searched the area before, but Hines said he believed Wood must have moved around. The boy's parents said he could not speak.

"It's been a challenge dealing with a child with special needs who was lost," he said. "... I don't think we walked past him. We're just thankful he was located."

Gov. Bob McDonnell called the boy's discovery "the best possible result to a very difficult situation."

"As a father of five, I can only imagine the fear, uncertainty and sadness that Robert's family endured during this difficult time," the governor said in a prepared statement.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar said search crews maintained a positive outlook even as the days added up. He said that helped keep volunteers returning day after day to keep searching.

"I've been in law enforcement for 13 years and I've not seen a community response as large as this," Molnar said.

So many volunteered, some had to be turned away, Hines said.

"This week we were all together. We all had the same mission," said Capt. Michael Trice of the Sheriff's Department. "It was an awesome experience to be a part of because he was found."

UFC 137 video: ?Cowboy? Cerrone wants all the big boys, says Melendez doesn?t deserve title shot

Donald Cerrone admits that the mental game held him back in the past. He's traditionally been a big talker, but it didn't always translate in the Octagon. That's changed since the middle of 2010.

In recent fights, it's all come together for "Cowboy," who looks to add to a five-fight win streak this Saturday against Denis Siver at UFC 137.

The new Cerrone is finishing fights in brutal fashion and he's retained the ability to talk trash with the best of them. During UFC 137 workout day, Cerrone called out Gilbert Melendez, Ben Henderson and even featherweight Nam Phan. An extremely juiced Cerrone said he wants another fight before the end of 2011.

Cerrone went into further detail on Melendez and Henderson during a Monday interview with Larry Pepe.

"I don't think [Melendez] should get an instant title shot. I don't think he should be able to come over from Strikeforce and get an instant title shot. I think he should come over from Strikeforce and have to fight Cowboy," Cerrone told ProMMARadio (49:00 mark).

The 28-year-old said if he was given a choice of Melendez or Henderson, he'd choose BenHen because he was "embarrassed" by him at WEC 48 when he was choked out.

Cerrone's finished 3-of-4 fights, but his last victory over Charles Oliveira was huge. He did it via strikes.

"When I was kickboxing, I was knocking people out all the time. I come over to MMA with smaller gloves and a faster pace and I can't even touch anybody. There's was definitely a lot of doubt. 'What am I doing wrong? What aren't I doing?' Slowly, I'm starting to find me again and figure out where I need to be and go have fun."

Conn. man convicted of kidnapping ex-wife, arson (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? A former advertising executive is facing the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison after being convicted Tuesday of kidnapping his ex-wife, holding her hostage for nearly 12 hours and burning down the Connecticut home they used to share.

Richard Shenkman, 62, showed no visible emotion as the six-person jury in Hartford rejected his insanity defense and convicted him of all 10 charges, including kidnapping, arson, assault, threatening and violating a protective order. His ex-wife, who escaped without serious injury, testified that Shenkman fired a handgun near her head, prepared a noose for her and claimed to have rigged the house with explosives.

The standoff in 2009 ended when Shenkman came out of the burning home and pointed the gun at his head. Police subdued him with rubber bullets and stun guns and took him into custody. Two psychiatrists testified that Shenkman was psychotic at the time, but the prosecutor argued that he was just acting mentally ill to avoid prison and presented experts who testified Shenkman wasn't psychotic.

Shenkman, who didn't testify, has been detained since his arrest. He is set to be sentenced Jan. 4. The 10 charges carry up to about 90 years in prison.

He also awaits trial for allegedly burning down his and ex-wife Nancy Tyler's former beachfront home in East Lyme in 2007.

Prosecutor Vicki Melchiorre said Tyler was relieved that the trial was over and that he was found guilty instead of not guilty by reason of insanity, which would have resulted in him being sent to a state psychiatric hospital for criminals with periodic reviews on whether he should be released.

"She wants her life back," Melchiorre said.

Tyler, a civil litigation attorney, didn't talk with reporters at the courthouse after the verdict but sent an email to The Associated Press late Tuesday afternoon.

"I'm so grateful to the jury for their hard work and careful deliberation," she wrote. "My family and I are pleased with the verdict and appreciate the prosecutor's hard work, dedication and skill."

Shenkman's lawyer, Hugh Keefe said he was disappointed with the verdict, but wasn't surprised because insanity defenses are hard to prove. He said such defenses are used in only 1 percent of criminal trials and only a quarter of those succeed. He also said he believes juries are biased against mentally ill defendants.

"He knew how difficult this defense was, and he knew he didn't sound pretty on the tapes," Keefe said, referring to recorded calls between Shenkman and police during the crisis.

Jurors declined to comment while leaving the courthouse Tuesday. They began deliberations at the end of the three-week trial Monday afternoon.

On July 7, 2009, police said Shenkman kidnapped Tyler from a downtown Hartford parking garage at gunpoint and forced her to drive about nine miles to the South Windsor home they once shared.

Authorities said Shenkman and Tyler were due in court for a divorce-related hearing later that morning, and he was supposed to turn over the house to her or face jail time for contempt of court.

Tyler testified at the trial about her harrowing ordeal, saying Shenkman handcuffed himself to her, fired a handgun twice near her head, prepared a noose for her and claimed to have rigged the house with explosives as swarms of police surrounded the home. Tyler had called a friend on her cellphone in concern over seeing Shenkman's minivan near her Hartford office and urged her to call police just before she was kidnapped.

Tyler said that Shenkman handcuffed her to an eyebolt in a basement wall at one point, and that she managed to unscrew the bolt and run outside when Shenkman went upstairs to check on police activity.

Shenkman talked on the phone to dispatchers and police officers several times during the crisis. The jury listened to the recorded conversations, in which Shenkman sometimes sounded frantic, screamed, used profanity and several times counted down the seconds to his threatened killing of Tyler.

Police testified that the nearly 15-hour standoff ended when Shenkman came out of the burning home, which was uninsured at the time, and pointed a handgun at his head. Minutes later, officers shot Shenkman with rubber bullets and used a stun gun on him twice before subduing him and taking him into custody.

Shenkman and Tyler married in 1993 and she filed for divorce in 2006. A judge approved the divorce in 2008, but court proceedings continued as Shenkman appealed.

Tyler also testified that Shenkman once told her that he had learned he could get his way in many situations if he acted crazy.

Melchiorre told the jury during closing arguments Monday that Shenkman kidnapped Tyler and burned down the home because he was upset she filed for divorce and he didn't want her to have the house. She also said he was scared to go to prison.

"Fear of going to jail is not psychotic," Melchiorre said, "especially when you're a 60-year-old, short, out-of-shape guy with an annoying disposition. It's not something that would make him popular in jail."

In the East Lyme house fire, Shenkman is being detained without bail on charges he burned that house down just hours before he was to hand it over to Tyler as part of the divorce.

Shenkman is the brother of Mark Shenkman, founder and president of one of the nation's largest money management firms, Shenkman Capital Management. His former advertising firm, Primedia, once produced the former "Gayle King Show" in 1997 starring Oprah Winfrey's best friend, who now has a new TV show with the same title.

Hurricane Rina threatens Canc?n and the rest of Mexico's Yucat?n Peninsula

Hurricane Rina, currently a Category 2 storm, could further mar the popular resort region, which has yet to recover from the damage Hurricane Wilma caused six years ago.

Mexico?s premier resort town, Canc?n, hunkered down Wednesday, as Hurricane Rina gathered strength and menaced the island of Cozumel and the coast of the Yucat?n Peninsula.

It was expected to hit Cozumel Wednesday before moving toward the Caribbean coast and onwards to Canc?n, a tourist area popular across the globe, but especially for American travelers.

The tourism director of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo told the Associated Press that currently there are about 83,000 tourists in the state. There are some 1,700 in Cozumel, which could be the hardest hit.

Along the stretch of beach, authorities set up emergency shelters and soldiers and marines evacuated fishing communities, while hotel owners boarded up windows and prepared for a loss of electricity. Cruise ships were also re-routed away from this stretch of the Caribbean to avoid storm surges.

Some were unconcerned. Roberto Martinez, who works at a bank in Mexico City and was en route to Canc?n for a business trip, says the weather was not going to stop his plans. ?As I have never experienced a hurricane, I am not nervous,? he says. In fact, he moved up his trip to make sure he did not get stuck in Mexico City.

Rina is currently a Category 2 storm, with winds at 110 mph on Wednesday morning, the US National Hurricane Center reported.

Canc?n was hit with Hurricane Wilma six years ago, and the beaches have never recovered. Many beaches were washed away; hotel owners have instead built board walks that jut out from their hotels so that tourists can at least be near the water.

Heavy rains could prove problematic, not just for the resort area but further towards the Gulf. The state of Tabasco has been suffering from floods.

Berlusconi heads to summit with minimum reform promise (Reuters)

ROME (Reuters) ? Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is expected to give a European summit on Wednesday only vague promises of economic reform instead of the firm undertakings demanded by European leaders.

Berlusconi has been caught between a tough ultimatum by euro zone leaders and the adamant refusal of his Northern League partners in a center-right coalition to make more than slight concessions on pensions -- a key plank of the reform program.

Both Northern League leader Umberto Bossi and analysts said it was unclear whether the Italian promises would be enough to pacify euro zone leaders or markets.

Initial signs from the latter were not encouraging, with Italy paying the highest yield in more than three years on six-month BOT bills at an auction on Wednesday.

In addition, the head of Italy's biggest retail bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, said he was disappointed by the sketchy agreement reached between Berlusconi and Bossi in late-night talks on Tuesday which provided for only a slight acceleration in increasing the retirement age from 65 to 67.

Bossi and his supporters in the northern devolutionist party refused point blank to sanction a more significant reform that would abolish a system under which workers can retire early if they have paid 40 years of pension contributions.

"In the situation we are in, I expected an economic program that would be agreed by everyone and not just unconfirmed suggestions to take to Europe. I am disappointed," Corrado Passera told reporters at the margins of a conference.

The head of Italy's banking association urged the government to stop delaying reforms that would restore confidence. "Now is the time to act and we need to act, quickly and well," Giuseppe Mussari told the same conference.

Berlusconi will take to Brussels a "letter of intent" outlining Italy's plan for reforms demanded by its EU partners as a condition for European Central Bank buying of its bonds --vital to avoid it being overwhelmed by repayments on its massive debt pile.

Media reports say the 14-page letter contains little detail on growth-boosting measures but promises to balance the budget by 2013 and lists previously agreed reforms.

Incoming ECB chief Mario Draghi said ideas outlined in Berlusconi's letter must be implemented rapidly. Draghi, who is leaving Italy's central bank to take up the new role, said the situation in Italy was "confused and dramatic."

DEBT CRISIS

The euro zone's number three economy is at the center of the debt crisis as investors fret about its sluggish growth and political instability. It needs to issue some 600 billion euros in bonds in the next three years to refinance maturing debt.

"In the end we have found a way. Now we will see what the EU says," Bossi told reporters late on Tuesday after a day of difficult talks with Berlusconi.

But Bossi said he was still pessimistic about the survival of the coalition. Berlusconi's office denied on Wednesday that he had made a secret agreement with Bossi to resign at the end of the year.

However, analysts say Berlusconi is unlikely to last beyond December or January and elections are expected next spring, a year ahead of schedule.

Berlusconi has until now repeatedly said he expects to serve out his term until 2013. But reports are circulating that, caught between demands for action on the economy and the obstinacy of the League, he may throw in the towel soon.

Analysts say neither the League -- where Bossi's leadership is also under threat from within -- nor Berlusconi's PDL party wants a government crisis before the end of the year because that might tempt President Giorgio Napolitano to appoint a stop-gap government of technocrats to pass urgent reforms.

A delay would enable the center right to keep control of the way the crisis plays out ahead of elections in the spring.

The center-left opposition is also in disarray and is thought to be reluctant to take responsibility at this point for highly unpopular austerity reforms.

Italy has a public debt of 1.9 trillion euros, equal to 120 percent of GDP, second only to Greece in the euro zone. European nations, Italian business and many other critics say Berlusconi must take urgent and real measures to cut the debt and revive the country's chronically stagnant growth.

The impatience of euro zone leaders at Berlusconi's repeated procrastination is sharpened by fears that a major debt crisis in Italy -- much bigger than Greece and too big to bail out -- would threaten the entire European project.

The three main credit ratings agencies have all downgraded Italy recently.

Economy Minister Giulio Tremonti has promised a package of reforms that would open up closed professions, cut red tape and raise revenue through steps such as privatizations and a new wealth tax, but the measures have been repeatedly delayed.

Berlusconi has reacted angrily to pressure from Germany and France to enact reforms. He issued a statement on Monday declaring that no EU country was in a position to give lessons to its partners.

Napolitano also criticized the ultimatum, which many Italians see as a humiliation, an impression strengthened by the spectacle of Berlusconi having to write a letter of promises to EU leaders before Wednesday night's summit.

Price hikes help DuPont profit beat Street (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Chemical maker DuPont (DD.N) posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit on Tuesday due to a double-digit price hike and raised its 2011 earnings forecast, pushing its shares up more than 1 percent.

Strong demand for titanium dioxide, a key white pigment used to make paint and other consumer goods, fueled much of the earnings beat.

DuPont is the largest global producer of the chemical, also known as Ti02. Even though construction and automobile markets remain weak, DuPont and rival Ti02 producers Huntsman Corp (HUN.N) and Tronox Inc (TROX.PK) have successfully raised prices in the past year due to tight supply.

DuPont also makes a range of niche products, including Kevlar and Tyvek. Companywide, executives were able to boost pricing in the third quarter by 15 percent.

(For a graphic on DuPont's results: click http://link.reuters.com/vap64s )

For the third quarter, the company posted net income of $452 million, or 48 cents per share, compared with $367 million, or 40 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding one-time items, including charges from the buyout this year of Danish food enzyme maker Danisco, DuPont earned 69 cents per share.

By that measure, analysts had expected earnings of 56 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Net sales rose 32 percent to $9.24 billion. Analysts had expected $8.79 billion.

DuPont's 15 percent price jump was its largest quarterly increase in more than a decade.

Most of the price rise came in the performance chemicals unit, which makes the Ti02 pigment.

The companywide increase had an effect on demand: Total volume rose only 1 percent during the quarter.

DuPont said that while demand for Ti02 remains strong, it expects a "pause" during the fourth quarter.

"Titanium dioxide remains a central element of the DuPont story," Ticonderoga Securities analyst Mark Gulley said. "We estimate that Ti02 will be about 25 percent of this year's earnings and next year could be a third."

Strong Latin American sales partially offset heavy spending in DuPont's agriculture unit, where an operating loss shrank 64 percent to $69 million.

The unit was hampered last August after DuPont recalled its widely used Imprelis herbicide. Many customers and several lawsuits had complained that the treatment killed thousands of trees.

The company spent heavily in its safety and protection unit, which makes the popular Kevlar material for bulletproof vests. DuPont recently expanded a South Carolina Kevlar plant.

Operating income in the safety and protection unit slipped 12 percent to $118 million.

Last month a U.S. federal jury awarded DuPont $919.9 million in damages, ruling that Kolon Industries Inc (120110.KS) had stolen Kevlar trade secrets. Kolon is appealing the ruling.

For the year, DuPont expects to earn $3.97 to $4.05 per share. The company had previously forecast $3.90 to $4.05.

Analysts expect 2011 earnings of $3.96 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Shares of Wilmington, Delaware-based DuPont were up 1.5 percent at $46.80 in trading before the market opened. The stock has fallen 8 percent so far this year.

Underwater volcano spews exotic lava

Charles Harvey, contributor

This video, taken a kilometre down in the south-west Pacific Ocean near Tonga, shows an exotic type of volcanic lava normally associated with the birth of a subduction zone.

Boninite forms when mantle rock reacts with hydrothermal fluid and then melts. It typically forms during the early stages of subduction, when one tectonic plate is forced below another.

The lava contains huge quantities of super-hot steam, carbon dioxide and sulphur. When the molten rock hit the cool, dense waters of the Pacific, these gases cause explosions that fragment the new rock, creating the characteristic pillow and bubble shapes seen in the video.

"Observing the eruption in real time was a rare and special opportunity, because we know so little about how submarine volcanic activity behaves," says Robert Embley of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and co-author of the research.

"This is one of only a handful of glimpses of the process we've had to date and is the first time we've actually observed natural submarine light from the glowing magma."

Why I Like This Homebuilder -- Even in the Struggling Housing Market (The Motley Fool)

You might not be feeling too upbeat about the housing sector, but you cannot afford to ignore this homebuilder.

NVR (NYSE: NVR - News), one of the largest homebuilders, managed to notch higher sales in its third quarter, but couldn't go beyond a flat bottom line. OK, so what's good about that?

Well, there are some really interesting things about NVR and its numbers that are worth knowing before tossing the company aside as another poor homebuilder.

    Lots to cheer
It seems like homebuyers are finally putting the sweet memories of the first-time homebuyer tax credit behind and plodding back to shop. What else can be the reason behind NVR's 5% rise in third-quarter revenues when its first and second quarters saw miserable sales drops of 13% and 28% year over year, respectively?

Higher orders are a good indication of buyers coming in. NVR's new home orders rose 3%, and settlements were 6% higher from the year-ago quarter. Note how peers are also reporting a flow of orders.

During the most recent quarter, Beazer Homes' (NYSE: BZH - News) orders rose a good 33%, while Standard Pacific (NYSE: SPF - News) saw 6% rise in orders in its last reported quarter. KB Home's (NYSE: KBH - News) third-quarter orders were up by an astonishing 40%. Things are getting interesting in this sector, for sure.

And there's more to cheer as far as NVR's numbers are concerned. Its cancellation rate dropped to 15% from 17.9% a year ago. Backlogs -- a crucial indicator of future revenues -- also went up by 3% in the last quarter. Like orders, backlogs are rising across the board. Lennar's (NYSE: LEN - News) third-quarter backlogs were up by 11%, while Pulte Group's (NYSE: PHM - News) backlogs were up by 2% in its second quarter.

If everything was so good, where was the drag?
NVR's mortgage banking segment has been a drag on its margins. Loan production fell 2%, pulling the segment's operating income down by 34%. It looks like tighter credit requirements are putting pressure on this segment. This sharp drop was why NVR's bottom line remained flat at $43.4 million in spite of its homebuilding segment doing well.

    Dodging pitfalls
An interesting factor that helped NVR stay above water during the slowdown and also sets it apart from peers is its less-land policy. NVR has tried to keep itself insulated from land-related volatility issues by avoiding buying land upfront.

However, some months back, NVR deviated by agreeing to buy a big land portfolio in its most focused Washington, D.C. metro area. How well this will work for NVR is yet to be seen, since this region might also be slowing down a bit.

    The Foolish bottom line
I'm really glad to see NVR's homebuilding segment doing well. I've mentioned before how strong this company's balance sheet is. NVR has also been aggressively repurchasing shares, creating a lot of shareholder value.

The housing markets may also be showing early signs of recovering. And in such a case, I do not hesitate to say that once things really start building up in the sector, NVR could be the best bet around.

Make sure you keep watching NVR. Click here to add it to your stock Watchlist.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama on Friday declared an end to the Iraq war, one of the longest and most divisive conflicts in U.S. history, announcing that all American troops would be withdrawn from the country by year's end.

Obama's statement put an end to months of wrangling over whether the U.S. would maintain a force in Iraq beyond 2011. He never mentioned the tense and ultimately fruitless negotiations with Iraq over whether to keep several thousand U.S. forces there as a training force and a hedge against meddling from Iran or other outside forces.

Instead, Obama spoke of a promise kept, a new day for a self-reliant Iraq and a focus on building up the economy at home.

"I can report that, as promised, the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by the end of the year," Obama said. "After nearly nine years, America's war in Iraq will be over."

Obama spoke after a private video conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and he offered assurances that the two leaders agreed on the decision.

The U.S. military presence in Iraq stands at just under 40,000. All U.S. troops are to exit the country in accordance with a deal struck between the countries in 2008 when George W. Bush was president.

Obama, an opponent of the war from the start, took office and accelerated the end of the conflict. In August 2010, he declared the U.S. combat mission over.

"Over the next two months our troops in Iraq, tens of thousands of them, will pack up their gear and board convoys for the journey home," Obama said. "The last American soldier will cross the border out of Iraq with their heads held high, proud of their success and knowing that the American people stand united in our support for our troops."

More than 4,400 American military members have been killed since the U.S. and its allies invaded Iraq in March 2003.

The Associated Press first reported last week that the United States would not keep troops in Iraq past the year-end withdrawal deadline, except for some soldiers attached to the U.S. Embassy.

Denis McDonough, the White House's deputy national security adviser, said that in addition to the standard Marine security detail, the U.S. will also have 4,000 to 5,000 contractors to provide security for U.S. diplomats, including at the U.S. embassy in Baghdad and U.S. consulates in Basra and Erbil.

In recent months, Washington had been discussing with Iraqi leaders the possibility of several thousand American troops remaining to continue training Iraqi security forces.

Throughout the discussions, Iraqi leaders refused to give U.S. troops immunity from prosecution in Iraqi courts, and the Americans refused to stay without that guarantee.

Moreover, Iraq's leadership has been split on whether it wanted American forces to stay.

When the 2008 agreement requiring all U.S. forces to leave Iraq was passed, many U.S. officials assumed it would inevitably be renegotiated so that Americans could stay longer.

The U.S. said repeatedly this year it would entertain an offer from the Iraqis to have a small force stay behind, and the Iraqis said they would like American military help. But as the year wore on and the number of American troops that Washington was suggesting could stay behind dropped, it became increasingly clear that a U.S. troop presence was not a sure thing.

The issue of legal protection for the Americans was the deal-breaker.

But administration officials said they feel confident that the Iraqi security forces are well prepared to take the lead in their country. McDonough said assessment after assessment of the preparedness of Iraqi forces concluded that "these guys are ready; these guys are capable; these guys are proven; importantly, they're proven because they've been tested in a lot of the kinds of threats that they're going to see going forward.

"So we feel very good about that."

Pulling troops out by the end of this year allows both al-Maliki and Obama to claim victory.

Obama kept a campaign promise to end the war, and al-Maliki will have ended the American presence and restored Iraqi sovereignty.

The president used the war statement to once again turn attention back to the economy, the domestic concern that is expected to determine whether he wins re-election next year.

"After a decade of war the nation that we need to build and the nation that we will build is our own, an America that sees its economic strength restored just as we've restored our leadership around the globe."

Nokia Sabre brandished ahead of launch, expected to unveil its Mango of steel next week?

Andy Lees mentioned at AsiaD that Nokia would be launching more than one Windows Phone at its London-based event next week, and there's a chance that the prototype you see above could be unveiled alongside the Nokia 800 Sea Ray. Pocketnow is referring to the Mr. Blurrycam-produced image as the Sabre, said to be running on a 1.4GHz single-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 3.5-inch WVGA display and a 5MP rear camera. The alleged price won't stab your wallet, as the source claims it'll cost somewhere between $410 and $480. Of course, there's less than a week before Nokia World begins and the speculation ends, and we'll be there to deliver the blow-by-blow action as it happens.

Update: Commenters have made the connection between this mysterious device and the recently-announced Nokia 603, a Symbian Belle handset, with the hardware buttons simply whited out at the bottom. And we're definitely seeing the resemblance -- in fact, if you look closely enough at the Metro UI it appears slightly crooked, as if the stack of tiles is leaning to the right. We'd say the chances of this image being a fake are quite high.

    The Real Science behind Scientology

    Image: Illustration by Richard Mia

In the 1990s I had the opportunity to dine with the late musician Isaac Hayes, whose career fortunes had just made a stunning turnabout upward, which he attributed to Scientology. It was a glowing testimonial by a sincere follower of the Church, but is it evidence that Scientology works? Two recently published books argue that there is no science in Scientology, only quasireligious doctrines wrapped in New Age flapdoodle masquerading as science. The Church of Scientology, by Hugh B. Urban, professor of religious studies at Ohio State University, is the most scholarly treatment of the organization to date, and investigative journalist Janet Reitman?s Inside Scientology is an electrifying read that includes eye-popping and well-documented tales of billion-year con?tracts, aggressive recruitment programs and abuse of staffers.

The problem with testimonials is that they do not constitute evidence in science. As social psychologist Carol Tavris told me, ?Every therapy produces enthusiastic testimonials because of the justification-of-effort effect. Anyone who invests time and money and effort in a therapy will say it helped. Scientology might have helped Isaac Hayes, just as psychoanalysis and bungee jumping might have helped others, but that doesn?t mean the intervention was the reason. To know if there is anything special about Scientology, you need to do controlled studies?randomly assigning people to Scientology or a control group (or a different therapy) for the same problem.? To my knowledge, no such study has been conducted. The real science behind Scientology seems to be an understanding of the very human need, as social animals, to be part of a supportive group?and the willingness of people to pay handsomely for it.

If Scientology is not a science, is it even a religion? Well, it does have its own creation myth. Around 75 million years ago Xenu, the ruler of a Galactic Confederation of 76 planets, transported billions of his charges in spaceships similar to DC-8 jets to a planet called Teegeeack (Earth). There they were placed near volcanoes and killed by exploding hydrogen bombs, after which their ?thetans? (souls) remained to inhabit the bodies of future earthlings, causing humans today great spiritual harm and unhappiness that can be remedied through special techniques involving an Electropsychometer (E-meter) in a process called auditing.

Thanks to the Internet, this story?previously revealed only to those who paid many thousands of dollars in courses to reach Operating Thetan Level III (OT III) of Scientology?is now so widely known that it was even featured in a 2005 episode of the animated TV series South Park. In fact, according to numerous Web postings by ex-Scientologists, documents from court cases involving followers who reached OT III and abundant books and articles by ex-members who heard the story firsthand and corroborate the details, this is Scientology?s Genesis. So did its founder, writer L. Ron Hubbard, just make it all up?as legend has it?to create a religion that was more lucrative than producing science fiction?

Instead of printing the legend as fact, I recently interviewed the acclaimed science-fiction author Harlan Ellison, who told me he was at the birth of Scientology. At a meeting in New York City of a sci-fi writers? group called the Hydra Club, Hubbard was complaining to L. Sprague de Camp and the others about writing for a penny a word. ?Lester del Rey then said half-jokingly, ?What you really ought to do is create a religion because it will be tax-free,? and at that point everyone in the room started chiming in with ideas for this new religion. So the idea was a Gestalt that Ron caught on to and assimilated the details. He then wrote it up as ?Dianetics: A New Science of the Mind? and sold it to John W. Campbell, Jr., who published it in Astounding Science Fiction in 1950.?

Tips for taking great digital photos of your pet

Courtesy Andy Katz / Sony Electronics

Notice how the shade really brings out the color and texture of the fur on this pooch.

    By Josh Kirschner, Techlicious.com

In the past, we've offered tips for photographing babies and toddlers, and some of our readers have asked, "What about photographing pets? They're a part of the family, too."

So, I sat down with Andy Katz, professional photographer and a Sony Artisan of Imagery, to discuss pet photography. He gave me eight tips that will help any pet owner take better photos of his or her treasured companion.

Courtesy of Andy Katz / Sony Electronics

In direct sun, the dog becomes washed out by light.

    1. Beautiful light makes for beautiful photos
The best light is early in the morning and late afternoon, it has a warmer color and creates more interesting shadows than at noon. If you are shooting at noon, place your pet in shade or shadow for prettier light and more image detail. Flashes look unnatural, so try to stay with natural light sources, use a slower shutter speed if necessary and follow our tips for shooting in low light.

    2. Create an effect of movement
Shoot at a slow shutter speed while holding the camera still so the background is still but your pet is in motion. If you?re not using a tripod, keep image stabilization on to keep the background sharp.

    3. Take a lot of photos to get one great shot
With the large memory cards in modern digital cameras, ?Pixels are free," says Andy, so keep shooting your pet and sort through the shots later to find the best.

    4. Use color if it adds to the photo, or black and white for more detail
Always set your camera to shoot your pet in color and then decide later whether color ads to the photo. If not, try removing the color through your photo-editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop, to accentuate the details.

    5. Shoot RAW, if possible, to ensure you get all the detail
A RAW file contains all of the information captured by your camera?s sensor. When your camera converts an image to a JPEG, it compresses the image and some data are lost. It?s better to keep the files RAW and convert them to JPEG after you have finished editing or cropping them.

    6. Use selective focus to change a photo's mood
Choosing whether to place your pet in focus or the foreground/background can completely change the mood of the photo. Try it both ways and see which image you prefer.

    Andy Katz / Sony Electronics

On the left, the focus is on the dog. And on the right the focus is on the fence. Do you notice how the mood differs between the two photos?

    7. Highlight the eyes
Find a shot that creates highlights in your pet?s eyes. If the eyes look good, your pet will look good. Look back at the first photo. Your eyes are drawn to the dog's eyes and there's a vibrancy that you wouldn't get if the highlights weren't there.

    8. Let your pet be a pet
Don?t get caught up in having your pet pose for a photo. First of all, given that they?re animals, pets don?t listen very well and you're likely to get frustrated. Secondly, letting your pet act like a pet will give you more natural photos that capture your pet?s true character.

Police comb Kansas City home, yard of missing baby (AP)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Kansas City police are sending a bomb and arson truck to a residence where they're searching for clues in the disappearance of a baby girl. Spokesman Capt. Steve Young stresses there is no explosive device at the home.

Investigators executed a search warrant Wednesday on the home of Jeremy Irwin and Deborah Bradley who reported their daughter, Lisa Irwin, missing Oct. 4. She was 10 months old when she disappeared.

Officials aren't saying why they needed a search warrant. They have already conducted several searches at the home with the family's permission.

Young says the bomb and arson truck carried devices that will aid in the search, but he didn't go into detail. Many bomb units carry X-ray equipment that can scan solid objects and reveal items hidden within.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Investigators armed with shovels, rakes and a ladder on Wednesday scoured the Kansas City home and yard of a family who say their baby was abducted from her crib as they slept two weeks ago.

Shortly after sunrise, FBI crime scene trucks and trailers pulled up outside the house and a phalanx of FBI agents and Kansas City police officers gathered at the property. Officers used yellow tape to cordon off about a half block perimeter around the house, pushing back the ever-present abundance of reporters and media trucks packing the street.

Officers headed to the back of the home with shovels, rakes and a ladder at least 8 foot long late Wednesday morning. No law enforcement officials would comment on the nature of the latest search.

Lisa Irwin was 10 months old on Oct. 4 when her parents reported her missing. Her father, Jeremy Irwin, said he returned home from a late shift to discover the lights on, a window tampered with, the front door unlocked and Lisa gone. The baby's mother, Deborah Bradley, and Lisa's two older brothers had been asleep elsewhere in the house. Bradley has admitted she drank heavily that night and may have blacked out.

The parents insist their baby was snatched by an intruder.

Police, FBI agents, officers from area law enforcement agencies and the Missouri National Guard, have already searched the family's home, neighborhood, nearby wooded areas, a landfill and abandoned homes. Police have refused to discuss any evidence gathered in the searches, saying only that they remain without a suspect.

"We have a warrant for the house," city police spokesman Capt. Steve Young told The Associated Press early Wednesday. He did not explain why a warrant was necessary. There was no indication that the family has tried to block investigators' access to their home, which has already been scoured by FBI agents with dogs.

FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said the search is not based on any sort of tip. Patton said they were restricting media access because agents are using a procedure involving dogs that they don't want taped. She declined to elaborate.

Young said all previous searches of the house have been conducted with the family's consent. The warrant prevents anyone except those involved in the investigation from entering, meaning family members ? who have returned home from time to time to collect clothes and other belongings ? may not go back inside until the search is over.

The family's lawyer, Joe Tacopina, told AP early Wednesday that he had not heard about the warrant except through media reports.

"I don't know why a warrant is needed. They can go in and out any time," Tacopina said. "They have had unfettered access because we want answers."

He said the family hasn't been back to the house in the past couple of days because they don't want to interfere with the investigation.

The Federal Aviation Administration established a no-fly zone over the search area effective until 5 p.m., agency spokesman Tony Molinaro said. He characterized the zone as a safety precaution and said it had been requested by law enforcement. Similar restrictions were introduced during a search of the area Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Young said Bradley and Jeremy Irwin had not sat down face-to-face with investigators since Oct. 8, and had only responded to questions seeking clarification on tips.

It's been 10 days since the couple have answered police questions on "things that we believe only they would know about," he said.

Much attention has focused on a rash of recent TV interviews the parents have given in which Bradley admitted she had consumed several glasses of wine the night that Lisa disappeared. She also told NBC that she did not see the baby after putting her to bed at about 6:40 p.m. ? roughly four hours earlier than the time she originally gave police. She didn't explain the difference.

Tacopina has said Bradley's candid words indicate the parents have nothing to hide.

Bradley has said she expects to be arrested in her baby's disappearance.

BlackBerry maker tries to soothe angry customers (AP)

TORONTO ? The maker of the struggling BlackBerry tried to soothe tens of millions of frustrated customers Monday, offering more than $100 worth of free software to each one and giving some a month of technical support as compensation for last week's massive outage.

But some BlackBerry users and experts cast doubt on whether the freebies from Research In Motion would be enough to keep people from abandoning the tarnished brand in favor of more popular smartphones.

"Most of the people that use BlackBerrys are business people and all they care about is: `Does it work?'" said Chris Allen, a cable technician in Fall River, Mass.

The free software will be made available over the coming weeks on BlackBerry App World. The premium apps, which typically cost $5 to $15 each, include programs such as iSpeech Translator and the games "Bejeweled" and "Texas Hold'em Poker 2."

The offer runs until the end of the year. The free technical support will be available to corporate customers.

The blackout began when a crucial traffic-routing computer failed in Europe. A backup also failed, causing a cascade of problems all over the world that interrupted email and Internet services for many, if not most, of the company's 70 million users for three days.

The disruption could not have come at a worse time for RIM as it struggles to compete with Apple's iPhone and with smartphones running the Android system from Google Inc.

Apple Inc. released a new iPhone model Friday, quickly selling 4 million of the devices ? more than the average number of BlackBerrys RIM sells per month.

RIM is also in the process of transitioning to a new operating system, a major undertaking that introduces even more uncertainty.

Jim Balsillie, one of the company's co-CEOs, acknowledged Monday that the manufacturer is under intense pressure. But he defended the handling of its worst-ever outage and noted that RIM has survived rough times before.

"This is something we would like to offer as our form of thanks," Balsillie said.

Balsillie and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis did not comment publicly until Thursday morning, four days after the interruption began.

John Crean, national managing partner of Nation Public Relations, the largest public-relations firm in Canada, said RIM was too slow to react.

"They should have had their CEOs out earlier and more visible," Crean said.

In the first days of the crisis, Balsillie said, he was busy trying to find the root of the problem and didn't have time to comment. He said he was in the Middle East and spent day and night on the phone with customers and carriers.

"The most important thing is staying connected to the ecosystem and making sure you're on what's the root cause. If you spend more time on PR, it's less time finding the root cause," Balsillie said.

Crean said the latest crisis only adds to the woes of a company that has steadily lost the cachet of having the must-have smartphone.

"The brand has diminished significantly in the last year, and this is not helping at all," Crean said.

The app offer is a good tactic, Crean said, but by no means a strategy to repair the brand. He said he still has not heard what sort of action, if any, is being taken to prevent another blackout.

When service went out Wednesday in the United States, Allen worked around it by using a third-party Web browser that wasn't tied to BlackBerry's network.

Still, he's pretty sure he will get another BlackBerry when his phone contract is up next year.

"There's nothing that can beat a BlackBerry for productivity," Allen said.

Vandana Mehra, who works for the World Bank in the Indian capital of New Delhi, thought the free apps were "kind of ludicrous." Her apps tend to crash, and she doesn't use them much.

The outage was just the latest in a string of problems for RIM, which has faced product delays, poor reviews and disappointing sales. The company's stock is more than 80 percent off its high three years ago.

Shares of Research in Motion Ltd. slumped Monday more than 6 percent, or $1.57, to $22.40. Earlier this year, shares traded around $70 each.

Although BlackBerrys have dominated the corporate smartphone market, their popularity among consumers has been short-lived. Many U.S. users have moved on to phones with big touchscreens like the iPhone and various competing models that run Android.

RIM's Playbook tablet computer has also been a major disappointment. RIM said about 200,000 of them sold last quarter ? far short of what analysts had expected. And that number paled in comparison to the top-selling iPad, of which Apple shipped 9.3 million units during its most recent quarter.

Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. in New York, said much of RIM's future depends on releasing new BlackBerrys with the company's new QNX operating system, designed to compete with iPhones and Android phones.

RIM has delayed the launch of new QNX phones for months, but Balsillie suggested there could be an announcement on Tuesday, when Larazidis is due to talk at a big apps-development conference in San Francisco.

Balsillie said the new software "leap-frogs the mobile industry" and helps position RIM for the next decade.

This is not the first time the company has stumbled with its future at stake. RIM overcame doubts when it went public 14 years ago and then again during the tech crash 11 years ago. At one point, a patent dispute threatened to shut down BlackBerry service in the U.S. until the company settled in 2006.
