Conrad Murry trial stream app hits No. 1 on iTunes (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? The latest high-profile celebrity trial has celeb watchers everywhere tuned in on TV and the Interwebs, and now, of course, there's a cell phone app to make sure people don't miss a minute of coverage of the Conrad Murray trial.

The "Michael Jackson Doctor Trial" app is already No. 1 in iTunes' news app store, with the live video provided by KTTV, the Fox TV station in Los Angeles.

The app, also available for Android phones, has been downloaded all around the world, the New York Post reports. Fox TV exec Jose Rios told the newspaper the idea for the app came after a "Casey Anthony Trial" app proved to be a big seller in June.

"I thought that was a smart thing that they had done," Rios said. "When Michael Jackson died, there was a huge outpouring (in Los Angeles), and we thought that a lot of his fans and other people would want to watch (the trial), so we decided to go ahead."

Rios added he's not worried about any charges that KTTV is trying to profit from the trial and its tragic subject matter.

"If you're saying that, then you probably believe that about all the coverage of (the trial)."

Diabetes again linked to colon cancer risk (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? A new research review confirms that people with diabetes have a somewhat increased risk of colon cancer -- but the reasons for the connection, and what should be done about it, remain unclear.

Combining the results of 14 international studies, researchers found that overall, people with diabetes were 38 percent more likely to be diagnosed with colon cancer than those who were diabetes-free.

There was also a 20 percent increase in the risk of rectal cancer, though that appeared to be confined to men.

The findings, reported in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, do not prove that diabetes directly contributes to colon cancer in some people.

The results come from observational studies in which people with diabetes were found to have a higher risk of colon cancer than those without diabetes. In most of the studies, the researchers adjusted for at least some factors that might explain the link -- like older age, obesity and smoking -- and the diabetes-cancer connection remained.

However, there could still be other explanations.

"I think we can make the statement that diabetes is consistently associated with colorectal cancer," Dr. Edward Giovannucci of the Harvard School of Public Health, who was not involved the study, told Reuters Health in an email.

"The cause-and-effect aspect is a bit difficult to consider since diabetes is such a complex disease," said Giovannucci, who studies the underlying causes of colon cancer.

He said it seems likely that some aspect of diabetes contributes to colon cancer, but it's not certain what.

One theory is that hormones are involved.

People with diabetes tend to have high levels of the blood-sugar-regulating hormone insulin, as well as related hormones called insulin-like growth factors. Those hormones cause cells to grow and spread, and that may include cancer cells.

Whatever the mechanism, if diabetes does contribute to colon cancer, it's not clear what the implications would be.

People with diabetes are not advised to get colon cancer screening any more often, or at a younger age, than people without diabetes, said Dr. Hiroki Yuhara, who led the new study while based at the University of California, Berkeley.

And it's not clear if that advice will change at any time in the future, Yuhara told Reuters Health in an email.

Experts recommend that most people start colon cancer screening at the age of 50, with any of several tests -- including stool tests that look for hidden blood, or invasive tests like sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy.

People with certain risk factors for colon cancer -- like inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or colitis) or a strong family history of the cancer -- are told to start screening earlier. Diabetes is not currently considered one of those risk factors.

And there's evidence that the link between diabetes and colon cancer risk may be weakening.

A study published last year by researchers at the American Cancer Society (ACS) found that among more than 184,000 older Americans followed for 15 years, men with type 2 diabetes were about one-quarter more likely to be diagnosed with colon cancer than diabetes-free men were.

But that increase in risk was modest and, the researchers said, smaller than past studies had suggested.

What's more, there was no similar increase seen among women with type 2 diabetes. (The study was not included in the current analysis, which considered studies published from the 1990s through 2009, from the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan.)

The ACS researchers speculated that the findings might reflect better diabetes control among Americans -- and women, in particular -- in recent years. A separate government study had shown that U.S. women with diabetes improved their long-term blood sugar control between 1999 and 2004.

In theory, better blood sugar control would mean lower insulin levels, which might affect colon cancer risk.

But that's speculation. For now, Giovannucci recommended that people focus on maintaining a healthy weight and getting regular exercise: Obesity is a risk factor for both diabetes and colon cancer.

According to Yuhara, people with diabetes should be aware of the link to colon cancer risk, and follow their doctors' advice on screening for the cancer.

It's estimated that just over 101,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colon cancer in 2011, while almost 40,000 will be told they have rectal cancer, according to the ACS. The average American has about a 1 in 20 lifetime chance of developing either cancer.

Debt Management Plan the Good and Short of It | titi-arts.com

If you have been seeking advice from professionals with regards to your troubles of repaying your multiple debts, you may have been advised to get a debt management plana number of times. This is the most common solution for debtors who are unable to pay their debts because of unexpected financial problems.

Debtors have to apply for a debt management plan from debt management companies. The chosen company will negotiate with the creditors for revised and more affordable terms on behalf of the debtors. The company will also handle all future negotiations with the creditors, relieving the debtors from the burden of having to face collectors themselves.

The best thing about a debt management plan is that debtors will only have to make a single payment each month in order to repay multiple loans. What?s more, the new terms for the consolidated debts usually come with a reduced interest rate and cheaper monthly dues.

These new terms are calculated based from the debtor?s current income and expenditures to ensure that debtors will now be able to afford paying out their debts without sacrificing their needs for other expenses.

Learn How to Use Podcasting Software to Boost Your Online Business

Learn How to Use Podcasting Software to Boost Your Online Business

Podcasting software generates immediate success for most savvy Internet marketers. ?There are still very few online entrepreneurs who are using podcasting to promote their products.?So it is safe to assume that the competition in this niche is not really tight.

If you want to get ahead of the competition, you need to learn how to use podcasting to attract customers and to sell products. ?The process is easy and it requires few investments. ?
A Closer Look at Podcasting

You are probably familiar with the power of radio broadcasts. ?For many decades, radio broadcasting gave marketing professionals a perfect medium to deliver their messages to millions of consumers.

This is also the principle behind podcasting. ?A podcast is an audio file that can be downloaded from your website. ?Your target audience can listen to your podcast from their computers or from mobile devices like MP3 players. ?It is also possible to directly stream the audio from your website so that web visitors can listen immediately to your podcasts.

]]>

To create a podcast, you need special podcasting software which is widely available online. This is simply an audio application that has the capability to capture your voice and convert it into MP3 files.

Internet Marketing and Podcasting

You can treat a podcast as another form of online content. ?In the IM industry, valuable content always plays a crucial role in boosting your online business. ?There are many ways how to maximize the power of podcasting software to bring your business to the next level.

First, you can use a direct stream podcast on your landing pages in order to provide convenience for your target customers. ?Instead of using a very long sales letter which could intimidate some customers, you can simply encourage them to listen to your podcast. ?This is a faster way to compel more consumers to do business with you.

Second, podcasting software gives you the ability to create products instantly. ?Of course, the majority of your podcasts should be freely given so that you can build a wide list of subscribers. ?However, your premium information should be packaged into a paid podcast. You can sell it like an ebook and generate perpetual profits for yourself.

Lastly, podcasting software gives you the opportunity to become a trusted IM guru. ?You can produce a series of Internet marketing courses through podcasts. ?You may giveaway some of these podcasts to build your reputation. ?Again, your premium courses should be paid products so that you can make a profit from podcasting.

The heat's already turned up for plenty in NFL

Tony Sparano

By ARNIE STAPLETON

updated 4:05 p.m. ET Sept. 27, 2011

The furnaces aren't even fired up yet and already several NFL coaches, players and teams are feeling the heat.

Chad Ochocinco still seems lost with his new team, the Patriots, even as Tom Brady piles up yards like no one ever has, and his old team, the Bengals, just played in front of the smallest crowd for a home opener in 30 years.

Kyle Orton has lost 19 of his last 25 starts and fans in Denver are wondering why coach John Fox isn't using Tim Tebow in goal-line situations like the one that cost them a win at Tennessee on Sunday.

Two quarterbacks feeling the hot breath of pass-rushers have been Michael Vick and Tony Romo. Vick's Super Bowl-or-bust Eagles are battered even if his right hand isn't broken. Romo has more to worry about than his fractured rib and punctured lung ? Dallas' depleted receiving crops and a center who can't snap the ball with any accuracy.

The Vikings would be 3-0 if halftime scores mattered. They don't. And with a tendency of frittering away double-digit leads, they're 0-3.

So is Indianapolis, where Peyton Manning is out, Kerry Collins is hurt and Curtis Painter might be in, although coach Jim Caldwell hasn't said whether his third-string QB will get his first career start Sunday.

The winless Rams are drawing inspiration from the crosstown Cardinals' late-season charge for the NL wild card.

"They scratched, clawed, battled, fought injuries, some tough losses, and yet here they are, with everything in front and a chance to do what they wanted to do at the beginning of the season," Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "I do think there's a lesson for our team there."

Joe Namath says the lesson Jets coach Rex Ryan should learn is to quit talking up his team so much, suggesting they're not as good as their talkative coach keeps telling them.

His mouth may be open all the time, but his job is safe.

The hottest seats are in Miami and Jacksonville.

The Dolphins' Tony Sparano might be the first coaching casualty of the season, if the Jaguars' Jack Del Rio or the Chiefs' Todd Haley aren't run out of town first.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross's public courtship of Jim Harbaugh in the offseason left Sparano on shaky ground and an 0-3 start with tough road games looming against the Chargers and Jets could sink him.

The Jaguars (1-2) have already switched quarterbacks, but a coaching change might not be far behind if Del Rio's offense stays so conservative. He'll have to get more aggressive and catch up to the league's prolific passing trend to keep pace with the high-scoring Saints next weekend.

Haley was hailed as the Chiefs' savior a year ago when he led them to a surprising playoff berth and ended the Chargers' four-year run as AFC West champs.

This year, his sour disposition isn't so easily dismissed with his team getting outscored 109-27. He's already lost three games and three stars with Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki out with season-ending knee injuries.

Fox's job is secure, but he might wear out his welcome in Denver if he doesn't consider using Tebow at least in goal-line situations after the Broncos' inability to punch it in on four tries inside the 2 led to a loss at Tennessee on Sunday.

"I'm still figuring out this team," Fox said.

Here's what fans of both the Broncos and Tebow already know: the "Tebow Package" produced four touchdowns last year in goal-line situations like that one Sunday in Nashville.

Although Tebow was ill-prepared to compete for the starting job in training camp, Orton has fallen to 6-19 as Denver's starter after winning his first six games for them in 2009.

Two of his four turnovers so far have proved costly. Against Oakland in the opener, Orton had his tight end wide open racing into the end zone for the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter only to drop the ball without so much as being hit.

On Sunday, he was intercepted inside of two minutes, sealing the Titans' 17-14 win.

Ochocinco was lambasted by former New England linebacker Tedy Bruschi for his tweet about being awe-struck by his team's offensive onslaught in the opener. Bruschi said on ESPN that Ochocinco should join the pass-catching party instead of being a bystander.

He still hasn't ? he's sixth on his team with just five receptions even though Brady's 1,327 yards passing are the most in any three-week span in NFL history.

Despite Brady's prolific passing numbers, the Patriots are downcast this week after blowing a 21-point lead at Buffalo on Sunday. Their longtime bunching bag had lost 15 straight times to New England, but now it's the Bills who are atop the AFC East at 3-0.

They're the feel-good story of the season so far, along with the Lions, who are 3-0 for the first time since 1980.

Of course, the biggest winner this year might just be the biggest loser.

Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck is waiting in the wings, and the Dolphins, Colts, Chiefs, Vikings and Rams have the early inside track, although there are plenty of other teams that could wind up the worst of the worst.

This year, that really wouldn't be so bad.

Congress hits budget impasse as deadline nears (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Just a week away from a possible government shutdown, lawmakers boxed themselves into a new budget impasse Friday.

With Congress' approval ratings already at an all-time low, a tit-for-tat over disaster aid left Republicans and Democrats ? and the House and Senate ? in a faceoff that's all too familiar to millions of Americans. Deep partisan disputes pushed the government to the edge of a partial shutdown in April, and to the brink of a debt ceiling crisis in late July.

On Friday, the Democratic-controlled Senate blocked a Republican House bill that would provide stopgap federal spending, plus aid for people battered by hurricanes, tornadoes and other natural disasters. The legislation also calls for $1.6 billion in spending cuts to help defray the disaster costs.

Democrats say it's unprecedented and unfair to require spending cuts to accompany badly needed emergency aid. They are especially unhappy that the GOP measure would tap clean-energy programs credited with creating jobs.

Republicans say that with a $14 trillion-plus national debt, business-as-usual spending is no longer acceptable.

With elections coming, congressional Republicans suggest voters will find it outrageous that Democrats wouldn't accept a mere $1.6 billion in spending cuts. Democrats are betting voters will find it petty and manipulative to let tornado and hurricane victims wonder if federal aid will be denied because lawmakers want to cut aid to automakers.

The parties' feuding earlier this year prompted a rating agency to downgrade the government's credit-worthiness, which sent shock waves through financial markets. Legislation finally did make it to passage to raise the debt limit and stave off potential default.

This time, it's possible that Congress will find a last-minute way to avoid a shutdown of many federal agencies when the fiscal year ends next Friday. The Senate plans to vote Monday on a Democratic bill that would not require spending offsets to release new money for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA, drained by several severe storms, could run by next week, officials said.

In the Senate, however, GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is confident Republicans will block the Democrats' counter-move with a filibuster. It takes 41 votes to sustain a filibuster in the 100-member Senate, and the Republicans hold 47 seats.

If the GOP succeeds, the Senate could accept the House Republican bill it rejected on Friday. Or legislative leaders could try to negotiate their way past the logjam. Congress was not scheduled to be in session next week, and House leaders said they don't plan to call their members back to Washington.

The governors of four hurricane-damaged East Coast states ? including the Republican governors of New Jersey and Pennsylvania ? said in a statement that "federal assistance for the victims of storms and floods should be beyond politics."

If the disaster relief agency runs out of money, the most immediate hardships could be felt by storm victims who need assistance checks to continue stays in motels and other temporary housing. Disaster victims could also face delayed aid for crucial repairs of house and structural damage, said FEMA spokeswoman Rachel Racusen.

She said the disaster relief fund contained no more than $175 million, which is already committed to aiding victims of Hurricanes Irene and Lee and the heavy flooding across the Eastern seaboard.

Lawmakers are quarreling over deeply held principles but a minuscule amount of money in an annual discretionary budget of more than $1.3 trillion.

Early Friday, the House voted mostly along party lines for a spending bill to keep the government operating through Nov. 18. It provided $3.7 billion in new disaster assistance, partly offset with cuts in two loan programs that finance technological development.

House Democrats balked because the cuts included $1.5 billion for an Energy Department program that subsidizes low-interest loans to help car companies and parts manufacturers retool factories to meet new fuel economy standards. Democrats said it would cost up to 10,000 jobs.

The Senate bill scheduled for a vote on Monday is nearly identical to that House bill, with the major exception that it doesn't require spending cuts to offset the FEMA aid.

Democrats said Republicans are cynical in their new-found insistence on offsetting new programs with spending cuts elsewhere. They noted that less than a decade ago, a Republican-controlled White House and Congress enacted two big tax cuts, new wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and a prescription drug benefit for Medicare without paying for them.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he would not "capitulate to the job-destroying bill" from the House.

But GOP leaders said Democrats have not absorbed the lessons of the 2010 elections, when tea party-backed conservatives won a string of victories and put Republicans in control of the House.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, R-Ky., said Senate Democrats have chosen "to engage in a political stare-down match that will bring us one step closer to a government shutdown, cause even more instability in our struggling marketplace and cast aside the cries of families and communities across the country that are struggling to get back on their feet after terrible blows from Mother Nature."

White House spokesman Jay Carney faulted House Republicans for the deadlock. He said they passed legislation certain to die in the Senate, just as they did during last summer's fight over extending the federal debt limit.

"The fever hasn't broken," Carney said. "The behavior that we saw this summer that really repelled Americans continues."

With the House and Senate so close in their overall spending targets, it might seem easy for either chamber to yield and avert a crisis.

But House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio has struggled to control a caucus in which several members put spending cuts above all other priorities. And liberal activists have pilloried congressional Democrats and President Barack Obama for yielding too often to GOP demands.

Boehner might find it hard to reconvene the House next week even if he wants to. House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier, R-Calif., said he was leading a five-member delegation on an overseas trip and won't return until Oct. 3.

The Rules Committee would probably have to sign off on a bill to keep the government running after Oct. 1 before the full House could vote. Dreier said he has no intention of giving someone else the gavel. "We've done our job," he said, referring to the House-passed measure.

International Travel Medical Insurance | International Traveling

International travel medical insurance is used by short-term travelers, mostly on holidays and pleasure cruises. Apart from covering medical expenses for a short travel time, it also covers emergency medical evacuations and trip cancellation refunds.

When you arrange with a travel agency for a tour with a fixed schedule, all the necessary reservations are confirmed. So the agency always demands a non-refundable deposit. It is done weeks in advance, and sometimes a person may not be in a position to undertake the tour or cruise due to a variety of reasons, including health reasons. Along with medical expenses, this aspect is also covered in travel insurance, and a reimbursement from the insurance company can be claimed in case of a cancellation.

Sometimes a travel company files for bankruptcy after collecting a good amount as deposits. The traveler is left with useless papers. This is also covered under international travel insurance. But most policies will not cover trip cancellation if the reason for cancellation is not genuine enough. Simply altering the plans on a whim is not acceptable.

While traveling, a medical emergency does not wait for the right time to take place. A mountain resort, a cruise ship or the middle of an African safari is where most accidents happen. To get the victim of an accident or sudden illness to medical facilities, costs are very high. This evacuation benefit is the second-most important coverage of travel medical insurance. Of course, the traveler needs to be fully protected against any illness or accident during the trip. It costs about five to seven percent of the travel cost to buy travel insurance and, considering the peace of mind that it gives, it is a good value.

Be vigilant, read all the small print carefully, and if you are not satisfied that you know all that is to know about this product that you are buying, do not sign on the bottom line. If a salesperson evades your questions, it is time to look for another one.

3-D Printing Gets Ahead: How Does a Printer Make a Fossil?

Features | Technology

3-D printers can create models and prototypes, replicas of your head, even living tissues?and at Lehman College, they reproduce and reconstruct ancient fossils

Image: Sophie Bushwick

In a small basement in the Bronx, the pride of place does not go to a shelf occupied by blue models of deformed skulls. Instead, the focus of the Lehman College 3D Virtual and Solid Visualization Laboratory is a large gray printer.

This is no dot-matrix monster. It's a precision three-dimensional printer that lays down layers of liquid blue plastic to create 3-D models of "monkey" skulls (fossil primate skulls, actually). Using this method, the lab's founder, paleoanthropologist Eric Delson, creates detailed replicas of fossil finds as well as larger models of them for closer study. These models serve as teaching tools, allowing students to examine replicas of fossils too rare and fragile for direct contact. As a research aid, 3-D printing simplifies fossil reconstruction and even allows Delson to simulate the skulls of primate ancestors whose remains never fossilized.

Designers in other fields use this technology to print out prototypes to decide on the best possible pattern to send into production. Other researchers have printed working transistors and solar cells. Even printed organs for human beings may soon be viable.

3-D printing has advanced quickly. Only 10 years ago products printed on expensive 3-D printers "looked terrible," Delson says, because the vertical layers were too thick and far apart, producing bubbly surfaces. But five years later the results were so improved that Delson could buy his Objet Eden260 for $150,000. Today, smaller printers now cost tens of thousands of dollars, and home printers like the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic cost less than $1,300.

At the Lehman visualization lab, a window on the 1.2-meter-tall printer reveals a printhead as wired as Medusa's pate next to a central black tray. A digital representation of the tray fills one of two computer screens connected to the printer. At the console, graduate student Claudia Astorino loads a digital image of a mandible; about a minute later, a 3-D lower jaw appears on the digital tray.

Astorino can slide the jaw on screen to a different position, rotate it, even shrink it to the size of a fingernail or blow it up to the dimensions of a modern human chomper. Each of these modifications can be made to all three dimensions, or just one. For example, one skull was doubled in size, width and height, but not in depth, yielding a model that looks like it ran full-tilt into a brick wall, squashing its face toward the back of its head. The misshapen pate adorns the shelf of deformed skulls, along with melted-looking specimens that set improperly or whose eye sockets filled with plastic.

And more than one sample can be printed at once?the jaw on the screen only fills a corner of the tray, leaving room for others. With the click of a mouse, another mandible could join it, or perhaps a model of a full skull. When Astorino sets a print job in motion, she first places as many models as she needs, decides on the proper size, and decides on the best orientations to give the models high resolution without taking too long to print.

Because of the 3-D printing method, the vertical direction will have the highest resolution?but it also takes the longest time to print. When the computer triggers the machine, the printhead moves into action, gliding back and forth over the physical tray and depositing liquid blue plastic to form the very bottom layer of whatever 3-D shape glows on the computer screen. This layer, only about 20 microns thick?about a fifth the width of a human hair?then sets, with the help of ultraviolet light that triggers the transition from liquid to solid. The tray sinks a fraction of an inch, lowering itself gradually into the body of the printer, and then the printing head begins moving again to deposit the next layer. All told, these many layers give the vertical direction a resolution of 1,200 dots per inch (dpi), which is better than the resolution of about 300 to 600 dpi in the other directions.

Investing in Gold

by Mike on September 19, 2011

The gold market has been very attractive to investors because of the incredible returns that it has generated over the past few years. Many investors are still looking to get into the gold market because they believe that the price of the precious metal is headed higher. There are a number of ways for metals investors to get a piece of the gold market. Here are a few of them.

Gold Coins

Gold coins are the easiest ways for investors to actually buy gold in a physical form. There are a number of websites and stores in which investors can visit to buy gold coins. Gold coins are more affordable than buying gold bars and can be easily stored in your home. The coins can be sold when the price appreciates to a level that you find acceptable.

Gold Bars

Gold bars may be the old fashioned way of holding gold but they are still available today. Companies like Goldline sell a number of different forms of gold bullion. Gold bars are sold in weights of 1 ounce or higher by gold dealers. The only drawback is that gold bars are expensive to buy because of their larger size and have to be physically stored in a safe location.

Gold Stocks

Gold stocks are a cheap way for investors to get access to the gold market and benefit from rising gold prices. Companies like Goldcorp have seen their stock prices take off since the price of gold crossed over $1,000 and ounce. Gold miners and refiners have been able to increase their bottom lines since gold prices have gone higher

Gold Funds

Sector specific mutual funds and exchange traded funds that invest in the precious metal have been increasing in the marketplace in recent years. Many gold funds tie themselves to the spot price of the precious metal so that investors can get the same return as the market price of gold.

All of these options are acceptable ways for investors to add a little gold to their portfolios. The best way for you to invest in gold will depend on your budget and investing preference.

How Writing Helped Me Learn to Stop Worrying and Love Public ...

I was always a shy kid?reticent with strangers, blushing and soft-spoken. But when I was little I was still capable of being brave about certain things. I acted in school plays?I was the jester once in The Princess and the Pea--and in sixth grade even played a song on my guitar in front of an auditorium of parents.

Something changed around high school. It was the beginning of ninth grade, and I got up in front of the class to share a clay sculpture I'd made illustrating one of our summer reading assignments. But my hands would not stop shaking. As I tried to explain the piece, I found myself stuttering my words. My heart raced. My palms grew sweaty. My throat seemed to be filled with sand.

Suddenly, my shyness had turned into full-blown anxiety. It happened again and again: the panic attack during band class, the day I hyperventilated during work. I'd once wanted to be an actor or a musician?now that was out of the question. I stayed away from the spotlight, sure that if I stepped into it, I'd turn into a shaking, stammering mess.

Writing was easier though; it was solitary and quiet. I could express myself without, you know, having to speak. And I did well distinguishing myself through my words. I formed intense creative friendships and enjoyed great relationships with teachers. Eventually I went away to college and entered an honors writing program. I knew I'd be happy there, but I didn't realize that I would be challenged.

But then I met James, another student who loved writing poetry. We shared poems over the quad and edited in our dorm rooms together late at night. One day, during my third semester at school, he asked me if I wanted to take part in a reading he was doing. He didn't know me as anything but fearless about my writing. He didn't know the truth.

I'm not sure what made me risk it. I didn't want to disappoint my new friend, I guess. So that Friday afternoon in the Student Center, I got up on stage with my scribbled-on journal in hand. I felt the familiar fear mounting. I felt my pulse start to race as I surveyed the audience?James, and my boyfriend, and my friends, and some teachers, too.

And then I looked down at my words. They were my words, written by my own hand. I knew how they were supposed to sound. I knew, deeply and truly, what they meant. As I began to read, something amazing happened. My fear started to drain away. What did I have to be afraid of? I knew my words were good; I'd written them, after all!

That's not to say that I didn't get nervous after that. But that first poetry reading during my sophomore year changed me. By the time I was a senior, I was reading my thesis to a room full of parents under glaringly bright stage lights. Because I never doubted my own writing, I never doubted I'd make it out alive at the end of a performance. And this confidence helped me normalize my fear of public speaking. By graduate school, I was able to get up and teach a class full of college freshmen.

It's funny how writing can do that. When you take pride in your work, it can force you to face your fears and demons without even realizing it. Whether you're afraid of rejection, or speaking in front of a room full of people, so long as you're confident about what you write, you've already won half the battle.

AG Kamala Harris Leads Strong Legal Defense of California's ...

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friend

By Warner Chabot

Kudos to Attorney General Kamala Harris for defending the state?s landmark Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) from a lawsuit filed against the California Fish and Game Commission by members of the Partnership for Sustainable Oceans (PSO), an industry group supported by foreign fishing equipment interests.

The Attorney General is taking strong action in protecting California?s coast from this meritless, ?Hail Mary? legal attack by overseas special interests. In a brief filed in San Diego Superior Court late last week, the California Department of Justice asked for dismissal of the suit, which was filed by PSO group member, the Coastside Fishing Club.

The PSO has battled the establishment of marine reserves off the California coast for several years. It has spent millions on lawsuits and a public relations campaign attacking the scientifically-backed proposals to set aside areas of the ocean to allow fish and other marine life to rebuild after decades of heavy exploitation.

Coastside?s lawsuit alleges the Fish & Game Commission did not have the authority to adopt 22 marine protected areas along the California coast, an argument that the Attorney General?s office aggressively countered.

?Misunderstanding the MLPA, Coastside presents a misleading and confusing argument incorrectly interpreting two legislative acts,? the AG wrote in her brief. ?The entire argument is not only irrelevant but misstates the appropriate authority upon which the Commission relied in adopting MPAs.?

Incredibly, the special interest lawsuit also calls for placing the Commission?s marine reserves before the California Coastal Commission for approval. It is astonishing that these special interests, which previously have called the Coastal Commission ?corrupt and overreaching,? now want to delay ocean habitat protection by seeking a Coastal Commission permit.? There is one word to describe their legal ploy: laughable.

The AG?s brief states that a Coastal Commission development permit was not needed to establish marine reserves, because those reserves are not ?development? at all, but constitute a fish and wildlife management plan exempt from Coastal Commission review.

To repeat: the special interests behind PSO are now on record saying the role of California?s Coastal Commission should be expanded. Oh, the irony.

The Attorney General?s brief also noted that over a 14-month rulemaking process, the Commission conducted seven public hearings to hear presentations on the status of MPA proposals, received scientific analysis, and stated that ?Coastside should not be allowed to challenge the regulations at this late date just because Coastside?s preferred MPA option was not selected by the Commission when Coastside participated fully in the rulemaking process and advocated the Commission exercise its statutory authority to adopt an alternative MPA option.?

And that?s exactly what this meritless lawsuit is all about.

CLCV sponsors the website, www.SomethingsFishyAboutPSO.org. The website reveals the organization?s funders and actions to undermine ocean protection efforts in California, the United States, and around the world.

Las Vegas man: $2M Bulger reward paid to tipster (AP)

BOSTON ? The FBI has paid a $2 million reward to a tipster who provided information that led to the arrest of fugitive crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger, according to a Las Vegas man who tried unsuccessfully to claim the reward.

Bulger, who was long one of the nation's most wanted fugitives, was captured in June in Santa Monica, Calif., where he had been living in a rented apartment with his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig. Bulger, a longtime FBI informant, was wanted in connection with 19 murders. He fled Boston just before he was indicted in early 1995.

Keith Messina, a restaurant manager from Las Vegas, said he tried to claim all or part of the reward because he called the television show "America's Most Wanted" in 2008 and reported seeing Bulger in Santa Monica.

Messina, 45, said Wednesday that he recently was notified by the FBI that it had rejected his claim and had paid the money to the tipster who provided information that led to the arrest of Bulger and Greig in June.

"That's what they told my attorney, that they were writing the check as we speak," Messina said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Messina said his attorney had called the FBI to see how they would go about filing a claim for the reward money. He said that after his attorney was told the reward had been given to someone else, he received a letter from the FBI saying his claim for it had been rejected.

"We still filed a claim," Messina said. "They're the ones who made a mistake. They would have had him three years ago. If they had followed my tip, they would have nailed him."

Messina's attorney, Michael Gowdey, did not immediately return two calls seeking comment Wednesday.

Messina said he was in Santa Monica with his wife and children when he saw a man who resembled Bulger standing by a pier, wearing shorts and reading a thick book. He said that when a young couple walked by, Bulger appeared to notice the man's shirt, which had some kind of Boston insignia on it.

"He said, `Hey, are you from Boston?'" Messina said. "Then they started talking about various places in Boston."

Messina said he then looked on the "America's Most Wanted" website, recognized the man he saw as Bulger and called staff members at the show to give them his tip. He said he later was told by the staff members that they had passed his tip along to the FBI.

Neither the FBI nor the U.S. attorney's office in Boston would confirm whether the reward had been paid. A spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said the FBI wanted to protect the identity of the tipster and information related to the reward would be released "if and when the time is appropriate."

Authorities have said only that the tipster was a woman who saw a television news report about a publicity campaign in the manhunt for Bulger, now 82, and Greig, 60. The couple were captured within days after the FBI began the campaign.

Grieg is charged with conspiracy to harbor and conceal a fugitive. She and Bulger have pleaded not guilty.

Bulger's lawyers were in court Wednesday to update a judge on discovery material turned over by prosecutors.

Attorney J.W. Carney Jr. said the defense has begun to go through thousands of documents but needs more time before it can report back to the court. A judge scheduled another status conference for Nov. 21.

Several people who say their family members were Bulger's victims were in court.

Patricia Donahue, the widow of Michael Donahue, who was fatally shot in 1982, said she and her adult son, Tom Donahue, plan to attend every hearing.

"We started this knowing this would be a long haul, and we're going to stick with it," she said.

Tom Donahue said: "We want to be here for my father."

Michael Donahue, a truck driver, was killed during a hit on a man who was cooperating with investigators against Bulger. Donahue gave the man a ride home. Bulger and another man are accused of riddling their car with bullets.

A Beginners Guide to Using Online Auctions

You remember that yard sale you used to have every summer? Well buying and selling with online auctions is much like that, except over the internet and with millions of potential customers and vendors. If there?s a rare trinket you?re looking for or simply have to get rid of that lava lamp from 1969, then with a little bit of know how online auctions could be the key to your success.

Primarily, just like you would in the real world with high street stores, shop around. Check the going price for the item you?re after by scoping out all the final bids that it?s been bought for. This will give you a good idea of realistic price bracket and from this you?ll be able to decide whether you can or can?t afford to purchase the item in question. Next, do some research into the sellers, check their history for positive or negative comments from people who have bought from them in the past and whether they returned for repeat business. The online auctions are a self policing community where members offer honest feedback on other members and buyers and sellers come with a satisfaction rating attached.

When buying there are a few handy tricks that help you cast the winning bid. For example, add a few pennies to your offer in order to creep above other bids, you may beat every one else by spending just a five pence more. Another important element is your timing. Last minute bidding is known as sniping, where a well timed offer can snatch the item from other members right at the last minute.

When it comes down to selling it?s very beneficial to buy several items from online auctions in order to build up your personal profile with positive comments and improve your satisfaction rating. Include clear photos and a thorough description including mention of any unique features that may help you sell it. Research the sellers market for other people selling the same item as you or similar, its always a good idea to be aware of your competition. Respond quickly to any questions regarding your sale and make it obvious that you accept credit or debit payments.

Familiarise yourself with particular auction?s rules. For example many prohibit the sale of firearms whereas some niche online auctions specialise in it. Knowing the rules will prevent you from breaking them unwittingly. Lastly, save all correspondence regarding your transactions as these may prove vital if there are any discrepancies later on.
